Work was slow, so the boss says ok to take a few days off. No arm-twisting required here! I made peace with the Mrs., said Ill see you in a few days, and headed for the cabin. After shoveling the porch and back deck I went out to check the mouse line to gather some fresh bait.

Four for four. We've got fresh bait! The shed always gives up a few.

I've never tried trapping predators this late in the year, but I'm here, so I'm going to give it a try. I've got six, MB 550 S, some commercial bait, two types of gland lure, fox urine,, and the four mice. Going to set the 6 traps using freezer paper above and below the Trap, and then brush in snow over the top. I'm going to use the kitchen broom to brush the snow in. I Watched 2 or 3 YouTube videos showing guys making sets this way. What do you think?

Sounds like a good plan to me. Go to camp every chance I get.

Also took a ride to the state land and found where some mink were running the banks of a beaver swamp outlet so I put in two 160s and a baited cubby with a number one long spring staked in two feet of water. After checking my Predator sets at camp in the morning I'm going to head back over there to the state land and try some Predator calling with my 17 Remington. The Mink traps will give me a little extra incentive. I know guys are saying that this is not the best time of year to trap mink, but I've never caught one, and I'll probably put it on the wall if I do get one
Back in the cabin now watching the news. Here's a pic of the inside of my cabin.

I'm always impressed with how guys will rough it like you are, hang in there and don't let your toes get cold.
Oh and better send the Mrs. of yours a note about first of April, let her know things are juuuust fine.

Osky, don't fret any, lol. I've paid my dues in tents , 3 or 4 campers, (one of which I almost died in using a propane heater), a remodeled 1955 school bus with a 50 gallon drums for wood stove, a small mobile home, and now this camp that I built which is probably my final stop. Never said I was roughing it, just at camp! I do visit with, and spend several weekends deer hunting with friends and family in much more Spartan accommodations than my place. Still enjoy it all. LOL

Ok, so I just got back in to the cabin after checking the six dirt holes. In two places I found where a pair of fox walked Within 10 ft of my sets. It does not appear that they even broke stride. Strange!

That is how I bed in snow but I put hulls under the trap where the levers and jaws touch the ground as I have had them still freeze down with just the wax paper. I take one piece of wax paper and wrap the trap in it. I use to use the hulls on top also but when the sun is out the hulls pick up heat and melt the snow on top saying don't step here. Nice camp. I like to rough it also at ours.

I use regular old wax paper but let it air out a few weeks/months in advance. You might have contaminated paper or they might be able to feel it's an air pocket between the pan and paper. Make sure your paper is crumpled up real well before covering the pan. Perhaps change paper and see if you have any luck?

Regular wax paper from the grocery store. I crinkle it up in a ball before I use it so it has wrinkles in it so it helps from the snow blowing off of it. Are your traps clean?
