Anyone know of a good mouth call for bobcats?
I'm planning ahead for when I draw a tag.

A bobcat usually does not respond from long distance to a call, or so I am told..... also seems to be true in my experience. A super loud mouth call does not do much good using that way of thinking. I have called in many cats using a Johnny Stewart Electronic call worn on a lanyard around my neck. Play a high pitched rabbit or distressed bird sounds.... low to mid volume. But for a mouth call I really love the Burnham Brothers S2 or S4 mouth calls. I modify mine some (have 3 with me calling, each modified differently)
but really like the high pitched squeals. With practice you can make many different sounds with them. Great call!

Can be done in WI, but percentage is very low .
Texas may be a better place .

I think it would be a safe bet it's a low percentage calling a bobcat in anywhere. But it can be done. And very self rewarding..... can't really explain the feeling of calling in bobcats to a shot gun. But find a cat's home range and hit it over and over....several times a week if not nightly (I call a lot at nite). There will me way more times of not seeing anything. but when it all comes together..... it's cool!!

I called one in using a rabbit distress call, mouth call, last week unfortunately the season wasn’t in yet!

If you call, they will come. I have watched them many many times in the open country out west while working dogs, and it is the darndest thing. They get distracted by anything and everything. The time it takes them to cover distance coming in to a free meal just makes me shake my head.

It is the same in northern MN where I shoot more than I trap. The big edge here is all the wonderful available deer stands. Scout out all the good bunny type areas, swamps and brush, and note tracks and usable deer stands. Swampy edges with moving water and beaver are great. WThe deer stand guys usually clear some pretty good shooting lanes. Try to be remote enough where human noises, cars etc won't distract the cats. I figure an hour a stop, with sneaking in, maybe longer if I have a good feeling. Any bunny or bird distress call works. Patience. A last tip is if you can call out over swampy or sway grass or whatever areas get some movement out in front of you. Having an attractor out front along with sounds is killer. Pay special attention to new clear cuts as well, lots of mice running around in all that downed tree top leftover. And again the deer guys will have some new deer stands with great views ready to use over those cuts.
Good luck.

*should have asked, can you bait them? Cats love deer carcasses. Placed road kills work great in winter, put a camera on them and when cats show up, sneak in and call the area. Apply some of what I said above to your set up ahead of time.

The problem with hand-calling bobcats is that many of them stand behind the brush and look through it at you so you never see many of the ones that come in.
For calling cats day or night a remote caller works well so you can have an angle to see the cat as he concentrates on the remote caller/decoy.

Sit still & call longer than you normally would for a fox or coyote. When targeting bobcats I'll sit for 45 min. When coyotes or fox, normally 20-25 min & i'm moving to the next set.

I have had them come to a rabbit and woodpecker but fox squirrel (wildlife technologies call) has been by far the best. This time of year I start with a bobcat greeting and them go to bobcat in heat and have some locked up come closer by switching back to the squirrel. I call at least 45 minutes and cannot think of one coming in less than 20 and you need to be well hid and good camo. They can spot you a long way off. Best spots around here have been young pine thickets full of briers and broom sedge. The thicker the better. I can only remember calling one in open woods. You usually have to call several places to find one.

I'm surprised there are apparently no bobcat decoys on the market. I would think it'd be effective. I'm planning ahead for my 12/26 cat season. I guess I'll use a rabbit decoy

I've called 2 in within the last year while I was coyote hunting. However it was out of season and at night. In Wisconsin its illegal to take a bobcat at night mad but I can't imagine it would be any different than day calling. Find sign, and call it for an hour everyday. If they happen to be in the area, they'll come in. They are curious animals so changing the calls frequently tends to help as they get bored easily. I use a Lucky Duck e-caller but any good variety of mouth calls will do the same.

This is my experience as well. Last season, i had one come in at the 52 minute mark....sometimes them rascals just arent in a hurry. I also sit and scan for a good 3-5 minutes after turning off the caller and before picking up gear. Them rascals are known for sitting on the edge and just watching, youll see them take off running when you stand up.
