That's about the jist of it.

When building cages and cubbys what size and guage mesh do you use to keep coons fron reaching through, and or, tearing it up.?

Thank you in advance.

The wood cubbies I made I used 1/4 hardware cloth on the one end cause that's what I had on hand. don't know if right or wrong or if it make much difference.

Saw your other thread. I built wood cubbies in both sizes to see if it makes any difference. I have only got a opossum in the smaller size.

I used any size mess available on my boxes, to get air circulation thru them, but prefer 1" mess so birds can work on the bait at back of the box. Bird activity is another attraction that draws in many animals due to curiousity.

Correct me if I am wrong but wont a coon be able to reach in and through the 1x1.?

Maybe I should have asked what the LARGEST mesh that coons will not be able to reach through.?

I doubt it but really do not know. We have no coon here in central BC.

Coon will reach through 1X1 easily, but 1/2X1 cuts back on reach through except for the smallest coon. As for what size to use, I just use what is handy. I usually have enough brush stacked around my cubby it dosn't matter much.
Hope this helps.

Andrew,
Now that, (the 1/2" x 1") is making good sense.

Thank you.

1/2 by 1/2 would be largest I’d use if bait is next to screen.

The thinner stuff is fine when going small.

I use 1/4 x 1/4 18 gauge hardware cloth on my mink boxes and on larger boxes I use 1/2 x 1 14 gauge.

Thank you for giving me that "gauge" number, and for the response in general.

1/2" hardware cloth or even smaller if that's what's handy/scrap.
