The fact that the coyotes are marking your yard is a bad sign. Now your dog is inside of their territory and they will kill it. Surprisingly, if it wasn't for the fact that your dog is tied up is the only reason they haven't killed it yet. They prefer the already mentioned technique of luring a dog into an ambush.

One friend had a 120 lb. lab killed by coyotes, another fellow that I know, who lives within a mile or so of the first guy that I mentioned, had a 110 lb. german shepherd killed by coyotes.

Id get pro active.
I'd get a proficient helper, good red lite nite system, proper shooters and stout chain.

Wait for for a moonless clear nite, get out back of your place and stake your dog down using stout chain he can't break out of, figure the wind and shooting lanes for cross fire, and set up an ambush. Let them get into the dog, rain he** onto those coyotes. Start with some howls, hopefully your dog joins in, take the farthest coyote first.
I'd make sure a shotgun was one of the weapons.
Got an area right near your house you can hang some deer stands to use or maybe there already are some?
They want your dog, set it up and let them come to the dog.

Coyotes have very little fear of dogs. but where I've lived in Arkansas and Louisiana its almost unheard of for a yote to kill a dog.
I think a lot of people assume its yotes that kill their dogs when they go missing but it may be more likely its the 2 legged predators that kill them.

That is the plan once the ground thaws, to put in a fenced enclosure . We just moved in first of the month and we have a lot going on. As soon I the ground thaws though the 4x4 post are going in the ground for his 12x24 enclosure.

We are keeping a close eye on him now. They are a smart breed and he is a very intelligent and family oriented dog. So far he will only stay on the porch and bark, defending home. Those yotes got use to having the run of the area with mainly older passive people living there, and they were all glad to hear a trapper/hunter moved out on their road.

swampboss, some people don't want to hear the truth.

Fido, who never leaves the yard or kills chickens and chases cattle, does both and gets shot. Coyotes get blamed. I've no doubt they can and do kill dogs but its not real common either. Not nearly as common as fido causing problems by being allowed to run loose. Why does everyone who moves out of the city get a couple horses and dogs? Why do they put the horses on too small of a lot and let the dogs run loose? Little Joey falls off when a horse acts up and they never get rode again. Just live in the little lot till only weeds grow in it surviving on hay. Get feet trouble cause they cant keep them wore down. Owners don't even see it. Got to be a few farriers reading this with some good tales of what I'm describing?

I’ve hunted hounds all my life, coonhunting at night. I have never had a hound tore up by coyotes. I’ve had coyotes stand back and bark at a hound many times but never had one attacked.

Then you have not hunted enough. They will kill your dog first chance they get. I had a friend who lost his healer dog. The coyotes came into his closed in screen porch through a doggy door and tore her up enough the vets couldn't save her. I had one of my big coon hounds tore up. I think the only thing that saved him is he was able to get under a pickup topper for some protection.

There are huge size differences between Western and Eastern coyotes and even in areas that are fairly close together depending on how much dog or wolf DNA coyotes have. There also huge behavioral differences in coyotes.

We've had had more than a few taken around here over the years. living on the edge of farmland and suburbia it's common to see them come into the city at night to hunt. Mainly cat's and rabbits but dogs disappear or are seen carried off by coyotes regularly real regularly here. Los Angeles has full time coyote hunters that work the coyotes that come into the city at night for food.

One here was even a big lab tied up on the back porch.

And yes, Had a farmer tell me of his daughter who witnessed the one coyote drawing the dog down the farmyard driveway into a waiting pack of yotes hiding in the ditch thing too.

But then I have one guy who tells me his beagle runs out into the field and plays with coyotes. Well that was awhile ago. Not sure how long that lasted with the beagle ...but.
