Just moved out in the country. Coyotes been coming through the property at night peeing on things. Dog goes out in morning and pees where they did. This goes on almost every day. Dog stays on porch at night on a trolley. Dog is a English Shepherd ( similar to Border Collie and Australian Shepherd)at about 45-50 lbs. and scared of nothing. If he stays up on the porch and being about one for one size wise will they just leave him be ? Should I be concerned at all ? More worried about the gang up like a 3 to 1 fight. And yes I will be thinning them out without mercy. -Thanks

Yup,

Count On It.

If They Take Him Down, The Next Time You See Him He Will Be In The Coyote's Turds.

They will take him down ,unless they let him join the pack.but you do not know. The skins are prime still use the coyotes to pay for your dog food.Sell there pelts. They are both show who been there that is why you have the peeing all the place. I had the coyotes do the same here for my coydogs. but they did not try nothing on my coydogs. They where at times talk with each other.

I'd be semi-worried but he's also close to the house so it may depend on how hungry & brave the coyotes are. Around here they wouldn't mess w/ a 50 lb. dog but they've killed all the cats close-by. From what I've seen, coyotes are more aggressive out west & down south in TX.

I forgot what it was called, but there's a formula for a crime to happen... We're talking coyote here... You need three things... One is a Target ( your dog ) , Two is the Desire ( coyote #1 and #2 ) , Three is the Opportunity .

Simple as that...

Yes they will be after your dog. Only a matter of time. Denning season is when they will be very aggressive towards your dog. Had a old female yote hound that would fight. One night I woke grabbed the shotgun. There were a pair trying to drag her out of the dog house. Many times while running hounds at night they would get a single dog off running one of them and take the dog by another or two other yotes and jump on the hound.

I have a large, English shepherd cross named Eli, who before we got him, used to breed coyote females. I also have coyotes in my area with slightly drop ears and dark saddles, that howl odd, that we believe are Eli's kids and grandkids.

A few years ago, 5 times in three days, a little coyote female came out of our ditch and ran out and flagged Eli. Eli would run over and touch noses and go to mount her, but our German Shepherd, Annie would run her off. I thought about leaving Annie inside and letting her and Eli tie and getting a catch pole on her, but decided not to, because I thought Eli might get hurt.

I have had 4 beagles and 1 vizsla killed by coyotes, while training during the Spring on different farms and 3 German shorthairs, that got in fights with coyotes. Coyotes will definitely sometimes kill dogs.

English shepherds are pretty gritty dogs, but I recommend getting a second dog, so your dog has a better chance in a fight.

Had 3 come in my backyard 3 year ago and killed 1 of my rabbit beagles and was going after a second when I came out. I killed one of them before they got away, but that's what got me into trapping. I wanted to get revenge

Coyotes are smart. While visiting my Nephew in Colorado his German Shepherd had just killed a coyote a few days earlier near the pen his daughters 4H sheep were kept.
One evening there was a lone coyote in the field yippin and yappan. We were going to shoot the rascal and was scanning the area with Night Vision to get a pinpoint on the coyote. We saw the lone coyote but also saw half a dozen of other's in the brush. We are pretty sure the one coyote was there to draw out the dog and then the others were going to attack.

Lost half a dozen (+-) dogs to coyotes over the years, common way is one smallish coyote comes right in the yard and entices dog to give chase, then a hundred yards or so from the house a pack of 5-7 other coyotes join in. The meal is over in just minutes.

Ah-yeh,.. Get rid of the coyotes.
We moved to what was rural Vancouver Clark county Washington (99th and 50th)
Always missing lost dogs/ cats posters in the area as new subdivisions moved in. I found the cache of 4 sweaters, and a dozen plus collars from a coyote dinner table 120 feet from my front door.
there was one old male cats I soon understood always at the top of the hay bales, the kids playhouse or the 8 foot corner posts. Twice I saw that old cat up high and coyotes working him. I did save the cat one night the coyotes were scrambling up my woodpile after the cat when I opened the window.

I saved my dog as she was getting mauled from coyotes by our basketball hoop. After dark she never ventured 50 feet from the front porch.

A rancher friend lost three of his cattle dogs to coyotes in one night,.. ( one took two weeks before he put her down)

I swear they try to pull my lab away from my place. I'd keep my eye on both.

I have read about wolves killing dogs up on porches here quite often.
Being coyotes are the top predator in your area I have no doubt they would try for your dog.

yes. A tied up dog has no chance to escape.

I would not leave them out at night. Ever...

A dog that is afraid of nothing stands less of a chance. That means they can coax it into an ambush. You had better get an enclosure for the dog or keep it inside.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I have a blonde lab male and at my old residence that had a driveway about one block long I got to watch a few coyotes "work my dog". My dog was barking mid day a lot. I know his barks and figured he was seeing something in his home territory. Went out the front door and sure enough there was a yote at my driveway end. As soon as I stepped out side Sampson (my lab) took off after the lone coyote. The coyote took off down the road and when my dog was about to catch up to him a few hundred yards away..... two more coyotes popped up out of the ditch and started to fight my dog. I called him back. Lucky thing my dog learned his lesson that day. He is still alive and as far as I know the yotes never ganged up on him since.
