I run my stove in the shop from 6 AM to 6PM every day and sometimes longer. Nice to have the place around 45 or 50 degrees on these zero and below mornings. I guess I am getting to be a sissy at the age of 72. I just don't like to start scraping fur when it is chilly in the shop. Also have to keep it warm enough to thaw fur.
Nothing like a good wood stove to warm your old bones. I use a warm morning wood burner. Been doing wood for a good 50 years. Best heat there is for drying fur.

Question for the guys that heat their sheds, or shops with wood stoves. If you have a wood stove and you warm the shed up to take care of your fur and start the drying, how long must you keep the temperature in the shed above freezing? I'm thinking about putting a shed in my yard for putting up fur, but I really don't want to be heating it on the days I am not using it. Ie. I might warm it up on the day I have to take care of fur and get it on stretchers, but then I'm wondering if I have to keep it heated for 3 or 4 days until the fur is dried? I generally only have time to trap on the weekend so the shed would sit cold all week. Thank you for your answers.

I get the fire going an hour or so before I plan to work out there on the cold days, when it is in the 30s I start the fire when I go out to start cleaning up and prep for any skinning etc then I burn wood until I close up for the night. If you had to burn wood until the fur was dry you would be better off with gas heat otherwise you would have to load the stove instead of sleep.

Working to the snap, crackle, and pop of wood burning in the stove is better than having a radio on, I prefer to work quietly.

My barn never "heats up". I just use the stove to warm my hands and sit by to warm up- I do keep a coffee pot on it!!
My pelts just dry hung up no matter what the temp. It's been below freezing here for weeks and they're just fine.

Like my late grampa always said, "Burning would heats a man at least 3 times." Cutting, splittig, stacking, burning, and ashing out..

I hang my cloths out in below freezing temps and they dry out.

This past November I had a few rats hanging in a garage drying for 3 days. Stretchers were hung in rafters with daytime temps about 35 and night time temps in the teens. The pelts were still wet and pliable after 3 days. After getting permission from the owner,(I was a guest at a deer camp and had permission to trap the adjacent pond while there) I brought them inside the wood heated cabin for two days and they dried nicely. Seems they would have just rotted if I had left em outside.
