Is it possible to spray paint my coyote snares ? They shine to much and I think the coyotes are able to see them. Will the smell turn them off if I do end up spray painting them ?

I did that a couple years. If you painted them now I bet the coyote is gonna sniff them.

I don't spray mine and I seem to do Ok.

I did spray 2 this year just for the heck of It and I did catch a coyote In each of them but I think It's a waste of time.

They have to air out after but sure you can.
I put acetone in a wide flat pan and swish them in it to clean off oil. Hang to dry 10 minutes then spray.
Not too heavy on the paint, doesn't take much.

I have painted some snares for years..... and don't paint some at all but leave them in weather for a year, they will dull. Usually do it at least a year in advance. Usually paint them LIGHTLY..... Lay them down all stretched out and really close together. Paint LIGHTLY, let dry and do the other side the next day. Usually paint mine brown (match crp grass) or tan( creek grass). Works great. I am sure if you get too much paint on them it could slow the snares down or cause the lock not to be very effective.

^^this, but I paint mid-summer...plenty of time for odor dispersal.

For now, I'd probably give them the baking soda boil , BUT, then another clean water boil.

I've never done anything to remove the oils from the production process, I've always felt they would rust inside out and be worth less. They always work for me. But I don't do anything to them but load them.

Can't see how misting them with color before the season would hurt a thing, most animals know somethings up at sets, cause one has been there a time or two.

Snares setup's air out pretty quickly and your usually checking them from a distance or looking for a flagging thats missing. A snare is supposed to be hidden and not disturbed when set, not like a trap set usually with a hole and dirt thrown all over, LOL

However I'm of the belief that there is an over whelming sense of scent contamination on trapping and snaring that is way over thought !

As far as how predators see--- I have had this conversation on more than one occasion with biologists and even had it with an optometrist during one of my eye exams. Here is something on it that's way more accurate than me trying to explain it. FYI folks !

I for one don't believe that coyotes for one example are even close to being near sighted !

I'm also of the frame of mind that colored animals see color and non-colored animals see in the shades of their colors, basically grey's, browns, and blacks. Why would an animal seeing color not be colored when it's not needed, verses others being colored for them to mate and see male and female. Kinda goes along with antlered animals, they all look the same until rutting, with the exception of scent.

However thats neither here nor there for snare set ups, as if they are properly set and blended the dogs or cats would never notice them on their way about. It's only the scent that would cause them a sudden stop or change up, yes seeing them would make them change as well, during daylight, however I am talking properly set up, not just thrown out to hope they set !

i don't know one way or the other. I do think canines see in 2-D, and i do know that a cat can spot some things a LONG ways away. Like a single hackle feather on fishing line.

I spray mine while coiled in 6” coils bundled 6 per bundle. Alternating white/black. Don’t over color. I want to hang snares that work with or without snow. Boil short in spruce bows with a small amount of baking soda. Hang and have caught many coyotes and wolves in the first three days. Don’t worry about the loop size as much as the height. Conceal the sides of the loop but don’t disturb the set. Set in bends in the trail, edges of open areas where they are not looking at the trail, or downhill spots.

In a pinch couldn't you just spear the snares with some mud? Idk, just thinking if one has new snares and wants to get them hung..painting isn't an option do to not having time for the snares to air out....

Painting is a waste of time. Unless you struggle with how and where to set the snares in the first place. Far more important is finding the right spots where you can blend with natural vegetation, etc. If you struggle to do this, all the paint on the planet will never be enough to give you consistent success. If you are setting snares properly, I honestly believe paint is such a waste of effort.

Again, I will say, get down to coyote level and look to be enlightened.

I believe 100% that camoing your snares with a light dusting of spray paint will increase your catch. Its very simple, if its harder for you to see, its harder for them to see. Sometimes you HAVE TO set in less than ideal locations if that's where the critters are traveling. I don't think its necessary to let them air out for long. A couple days tops, them go set them.

Lol, thought I already posted this, try again
I have seen a lower catch rate with non camo snares compared to camo ones before snow, I think even more coyote notice snares with snow on trail,
Lol big male I got today hit a snare on old trail that had about all the grass knocked down by previous snows, it was hanging mostly by it's self , lucky!
