$600 for a coon dog. Must have good lines then. Hounds are best when raised in the house. Gonna want a bark collar, and a tracking system when they get a bit older. don't push em into training, they will naturally turn on between 6-9 months. Until then obedience training should be foundation but there is more and you and your bro got time to learn with the pup. There is a book called "Walk with Wick" its a good book to get ya goin.

It would have been free too him.Their trying to get the youth involved. Dad had to turn it down though. That's to bad- maybe he knows the time it takes to honor the dogs desires. to watch a hound chain-sour is a very sad event.

Good one used to bring 5-6k$, might work good My main experience with hounds is from lion, bobcat and bear. People might think that is alot of chaching for a dog but if you figure in the time it takes to train 'em, the vehicle wear and tear, the food bill, the vet bill, and the equipment upkeep costs(everything from leads to tracking equipment) but that's were a houndsman might start feeling they got their investment back. I have owned a few dogs from "grand night" this or that coon dogs and they make decent hounds for what i do. But them serious competition coon hunters dog's get VERY expensive.

As others stated invest in a track and train system especially before running the hound. First time I turned lose my hound she bumped on a bear sign. 2 miles down the mt later I was determined to bite the bullet and buy at least a tracking system. Best investment The new fancy GPS stuff is pretty nice compared to the old telemetry styles. They have gotten pretty affordable too. Hound Doggin' is like trappin'- it can become expensive quick. But dang they are both fun to do. My wife is all in for it too-so it makes the biggest hurdle easy. lol
