I tanned the mink per instruction and to the T. After pickling, tanning and pulling I left the pelt to hang for a couple days to dry some. It's still wet today, day 2, I started breaking some of the hide but most of it is still pretty wet I guess because it won't break and turn white like most of the edge, tail and face, and the belly. Most of the parts that won't break are around the shoulders, back and neck area. Anyone have any tips? Thank you. I have brain tanned an otter before but this is my first time with rittels tan.

Too much tanning oil.

I mixed up 1 part oil to 2 parts hot water.it made maybe 8ozs of tanning oil. I applied all of it over a hr or so then folded it up to sweat overnight. The next morning I hung it up to dry. It is very oily. Do you have any recommendations?

Try degreasing it,rinse and then when it starts to dry proceed with breaking.
Did you degrease the pelt before tanning-mink skins are quite oily to begin with and don't need much tanning oil.

No sir I didn't degrease it. I figured the pickle would have degreased it enough as I fleshed it well and wiped off any sweat during the drying process. How about fox, bobcats and coyote? I'm going to tan a few soon and don't want it to go like the mink so far.

I go easy on the tanning oil at first, you can always spray on some watered down oil as you work it if it is too dry.

I see my error, I'll degrease the mink and break it then. I'll go light on the oil from here on. Thanks for your help.

I am just guessing that is the problem, hard to say with no pic.But I have seen that with oily skins.
How is the humidity there. If there are salts in the skin from tanning and the humidity is high, that can cause them not to dry also.

It's pretty humid. I rinsed the skin really good after I removed it from the tan. Some spots are breaking pretty good but the skin is really stretchy. I can stretch it out length wise and it'll just stay there. And then I can stretch it out width ways and the same. It's pliable. I think it's just too oily like you said. I did put quite a bit of oil on it I reckon. 8ozs is alot for a mink I should have known.
