I caught an old Tom in Arkansas years ago with flat topped worn down canines that weren't barely above the gum line. The cat was in good health as far a body weight so it wasn't missing too many meals due to the lack of sharp long teeth. Most likely had to modify its prey diet somewhat to cope with that situation or it may not have been an issue at all. Who knows.

On the same sort of topic, I had an uncle that had false teeth years back. He didn't like them much and always liked to eat without them in place and put them in after he ate. I guess it didn't affect him too much to gum his food since he ate everything everyone else did as I recall.

Got a 22 lb. cat w/ very good teeth & a 14 lb. cat w/ bad teeth like that so I'm not so sure the teeth are the best way to age them. I know they do cross cuts on bear, etc. to age but you can't tell me a bear that's been eating agricultural grain crops will have the same wear on his teeth as a mountain bear that's been eating harder mast. Same goes w/ deer, etc. I'm no biologist but I would think the softer food items will wear the teeth less...

This is my old guy. Caught him last year on a bait pile. Had covered up a possum carcass before he got caught.
