Looking to buy a Remington 870 super mag and was wondering why some have the longer forend and others have a shorter one. I know the camo ones comes with the long one but I wanted a black one with the longer one and wasn't sure if I order one what I will get. I think what it is is that the older super mags had the shorter one and the newer ones have the longer one but wasn't sure.

I think that’s correct. That’s when they redesigned the look of it. Changed the looks of the back of the forearm. I have a newer camo one and it’s great.

I think you are right also. I've got 3 of the older / shorter ones & we bought my brother one for xmas a couple years ago & it seemed longer.

yes it is longer , makes it harder to pinch your fingers between the forearm and receiver

I would not buy one. I bought mine about 6 years ago, new. Never used it until fall of 2013. When shooting 3 1/2" shell's they stick in the chamber and fail to extract. It was basically a single shot. I sent it back to Remington in the spring of 2014 and they said they replaced the ejector ($160 later. They would not warranty it as it was over a year old) not the extractor which I found odd. I had rarely use this gun except for Geese. It doesn't have 2 boxes through it. I took it out yesterday using 3 1/2" Hevi-Metal and it failed to extract again. I was (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman). Called Remington today and they want me to send it back in. I've got a 870 Wingmaster I bought in 1981 and it has never failed me. The new ones are crap. I would buy another brand.

If you haven't already done this take a 12 gauge bore brush wrap some 000 steel wool around it till it is a tight fit in the chamber, put the cleaning rod section in a drill and work the brush from the back of the chamber to the forcing cone a few times, this will probably solve your issues. I have had several shotguns brought to me with extraction issues and it almost always works, either there is plastic build up in the chambers on older guns or they just didn't get polished out enough on newer guns.

K91773, thanks for that information. I have a Super Mag and it works just fine, laminated wood stock style, but I recently bought a Stoeger 3500 and it has occasional ejection problem with 3" shells and shorter. The manual says it may not like the 2 /4" inch shells until the inertia spring is broke in but when testing a bit back they work fine. Some times they all work but once in awhile one will net eject. I will try what you do to cure this.

Agree with K9. Polish the chamber of the barrel and see how she runs.

I bought one when they first came out, and it's never once failed to eject a shell. It's sort of funny how some people have an isolated issue with something, and they just assume every one ever made had the same problem.

I’ve had one since 2002 and it has never failed me. 2 of my brothers also have them and their guns don’t like Kent brand shells. Any other ones they have used have worked fine.

I've got an older supermag. Kicks like he'll, middle finger always ends up bruised with shooting heavy loads. Recently it falls apart while shooting. It didn't pattern well with 3.5in. Tried 6 tubes with no success. Ended up getting better patterns from an old sweet 16.

K9 hit it right on the head... I have had one for many years and have had that same issue. Mine came from shooting a lot of 3" and then switching to 3.5" this was causing a lot of build up in chamber area and it needs to be cleaned out. As long as you clean the chamber regularly you will not have a problem with shells ejecting.

I finally put mine on the shelf and bought a Beretta A400 extreme as I got tired of the recoil of the 3.5" shells in it. Still a good gun however and I am now using it for Turkey hunting.
