Using any kind of urine will certainly attract deer to your set. I have a lot more deer snaps when using urine.

No Sir, i figured the bone marrow and lure are more than enough to get them there.

Plus, unlike other post sets they would like to haul that leg bone off and gnaw on it.

For that reason I don't want to possibly deter them from doing that by dousing it with urine.

Do it, Ken. Sure, it takes more work. But if you want to try a few, of you just stick it in the ground, yotes will pull it out and take it away or lay it back down 10 feet away and roll on it.

TEJAS, you helped me sold a mystery of a set I made this year. I found a deer leg when I was setting and buried the leg sticking up but put the hooves on top instead of buried. I caught a coon and coyote in a dirt hole across the two track from the leg set but nothing ever touched the deer leg flat set. They must have had a bad experience with deer hooves in the past.

On a side note I did get several good laughs on my wife and other people that rode along when I would point out that something had buried a deer as one leg was sticking up out the ground.

Thanks for the kind words fellas.

I sure do like trapping these coyotes.

For me, it’s the best game in town.

Here's a catch from a post set made yesterday.

The Set: GH II, coyote urine, & catahoula poop. grin

I put the post set on the outside of the bend, and a clump of grass flat set on the inside bend.

The majority of tracks were on the inside of the bend as always.

The wind was blowing from the post set across the road to the clump of grass flat set in the foreground.

Looks Good YC!

You might try to crowd the post just a little more.

Here's a fourth night catch from this morning.

This small knoll appears to be a point of interest.

There were four-five piles of scat in this one area, so I thought a post set was just what the doctor ordered.

Picture a dog lifting his leg to pee, the foot will be about a hand width out.

Well the post set produced but not on a target animal.. Ole bandit made a mess of the set, which ain't a bad thing cause it gave me a chance to reposition the trap closer to the post.. now if the rain would stop I would feel better about all my sets

Tejas, you shared an idea that will allow to now use 100% off the deer we harvest. The legs were the only thing I could find a good use for.

I still am trying to understand trap placement at post set to have confidence in them. The sets I see pictured most often show the trap bedded centered in front of the approach to the "post". Almost all of the domestic dogs I have watched mark objects stand with their feet placed off to to each side as they mark(which I think would most often miss the trap). And as most of the catch pics I see of post set the caught animal is front foot. Is the goal to catch these animals approaching to inspect the "post" before, not while marking it? I'm new to large predator trapping w/footholds but experienced in other trapping. Understanding the behaviors involved help me to best make a good set.

I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.

Hey Drake,

I place the trap to catch the coyote while he investigates/smells the post; not while he is marking it.

My target is the front feet, not the back.

When a dog initially walks up to investigate a post set, his front feet will be extremely close to the post.

I find those front feet will usually be 4-6 inches away from the base of the post.

I set my trap pan about 6 inches from the base of the post with no offset.

When the dog goes to mark the post, he will move forward and start hiking his leg just prior to lining up with the post.

Hiking his leg prior to getting into position to mark allows him to get closer to the post.

With his leg hiked, the dog will make one or two short hops with his planted rear foot to get into his final position to mark.

I find that the distance of the rear planted foot is right at 8 inches from the base of the post when in it's final position.

It seems logical to place the trap to target both front feet, vs. the single rear planted foot.

I hope this helps Dj.

It makes much more sense to me now. The trap placement is to where the trap is for a dirt hole(as in both the canine is approaching to get a good sniff. My mistaken assumption that post sets being about using the behavior of canines marking territory with their urine to catch them that it was where the were standing while doing it that was what the trapper was trying to exploit. I never watched close enough while observing dogs do it to observe their behavior to an existing marker before they add to it. It is the fullest understanding of behaviors that make the most successful trapper(and something to learn all the time). And the female squat while peeing really confused me, lol.

This is a good post to bring back to the top with the upcoming season just around the corner.

Perhaps a few more trappers could take the time and go through their set/catch photos and add to this thread.
