I feel pretty confident when I make dirt hole or flat set..But I can't seem to figure out the post set out as far as trap placement or if guiding should be used.. I have set post sets but haven't caught anything with them..really wanting to learn and be confident with the post set and the grab stick with I haven't used must. I would like to see pictures but anything would help and probably give me more confidence in making these sets . Please and Thank You....DB

Te post set can be tough as to trap placement ie male or female the angle of the post plus size of the animal. Does have a lot of vari biles. Best deal for me is to use subtle blocking and try to guide the animal. I use scat, dirt clumps, stones, sticks and weed stems stuck in the soil.not all at the same time but my goal is to create a clear ath without over doing it.

I make a post with a squirt of urine and put gland lure down by the bottom. I try and make my post sets a walk through if possible. I offset a little and maybe 6-8'' back, I keep the post low and lure/urine low so I keep the trap closer to whatever I'm using for a post.

Im no expert at the post set but I’ve been successful a few times with it. I Primarily target cats and like to use the set at smaller cat toilets. I came across a toilet with fresh scat on it the other day and dropped in a post set. Checked back in 48 hrs and had a nice cat waiting for me. Here is a pick of the remake as I dont have one of the original. The set was a little tore up but I tried to fix it as best as I could. The post is about 8” high with some violator 7 at the base of the post and cat urine dribbled over it. I took all the scat from the original toilet and replaced it with foreign scat from a different area as I usually do to increase territorial reactions. Used the scat as guiding with the trap triangulated between the two pieces of scat and the post. I like to make it so they have to keep moving to investigate each individual smell at the set as it give more chance for them to hit my pan.

Here’s the cat I caught in the above set

John, the car door is a bit much for blocking/guiding.

I do something similar to W84Rut. Urine at the upper part of the 'post' with gland rubbed into the base and then a different gland about a foot out. On the foot out marker I usually just make a tiny hole angled back towards the post and use my bait knife to smear there. Just trying to get more foor movement.

I generally put one of these near a dirthole or catch circle. Most of the time it is NOT the first set to connect though but I expect that is just that in the fall they aren't as interested as they are now.

To me on those pictures of USMC47 that trap looks to be bedded right in front and close to the post.. maybe that's where I have been wrong.. setting trap almost like I would a dirt hole and then some.. I would come back 9,10 inches and offset to whatever side looked the best as far as terrain

Sorry... so the trap is bedded closer to the backing on a post set.. about half the distance of that used for a dirthole..
