Go out this summer and make a post set without a trap in a sandy location were you can see tracks. It'll be an eye opener..

I like to add a p-post set on the downwind side of a new catch circle.

These two sets produced four coyotes and two cats.

The stob used in this set was taken from the coyote catch circle in the above photo.
The scat was taken from a cat catch prior to that.

A few more catches from the two prior sets.

YoteCope, on a straight vertical post you would be 100% correct; however, on my posts, I use not just gland and urine but I use something my targets want to rub or roll on up higher. My posts are leaned back and away from the trap. When they sniff, pee, or rub, theyre usually right on the trap. If they want to rub enough, they'll go back and forth. Good question!

And sift the sand and dirt around the post before you leave. The tracks will show you all. A trail camera on video is even better.

Better yet, I'll have some videos here this week.

Ron, I once told you that you'd be teaching before long because of how quickly you became a really successful trapper. You denied that. I was right. Love ya, man.

That cat yote double pic cracks me up. Tejas you sure are catching on quick. Most folks don't add sets downwind of remakes.
6 inches or closer offset at a 45 is what I start with but the lay of the ground and the height of the backing plays too. Like John if I use a rub type lure I'll use a walk thru set up with outside blocking.

Pecos Valley is kind of like magic in a bottle. Wayne says it's mainly for cats but butt sniffers will rub against it all day.

Sierra mist is a favorite.

Rocky mountain rub is another.

Too much good info in that thread to comprehend.. Sure made alot of trappers think! Straight beaver castor works for a rub on posts also. Apply it high though.

Both, existing posts are priceless. My favorite is a grass clump planted were the drainage is good. Get out this winter with snow cover and study track patterns on exciting posts . Doesn't take much for em to pee on it.

Good Stuff!

I put this practice to work at all of my sets during the season. It allows me to make adjustments according to the coyote’s behavior at the set.

When I finish making a new set, I make a pass over the sand to really smooth out the set area so I can see every step the coyote takes in the red zone.

I also make it a point to smooth out catch circles; as well as the area just outside the circle.

This same method works well at keeping tabs on potential places of interest; and if the foot traffic picks up, I set it.

I use snow for the same purpose. Smoothing out remakes is very smart, one of the reasons some have trouble recatching in remakes. But thats for another thread..
