I need a better gun oil for colder weather that doesn't get thick or tacky. Any recommendations?

I agree with takotna, I run them dry. To answer the question, try Birchwood Casey synthetic lube. It's very light weight, much better in lower temps than say CLP, (clean, lube, protectant) which is very thick in the real cold. Sewing machine oil will work usually. You can break them in with oil dripping off the firearm, clean them with a good solvent, and then try LITTLE graphite on moving parts only, but don't try to add oil after the graphite, that will make it stick worse than without it. Or just do the first two steps and then just run it dry. I use Frank Glaser tricks, putting the bolt on the wood stove to get any condensation out of it. Bolts need to be taken apart and cleaned very well, most people don't know how to take them apart, it's not too hard, but very worth the effort. Birchwood's synthetic is the best I have found if you do want it oiled. Hope this helps.

I just picked up an A17. The bolt had a lot of grease on it that I cleaned off. I will try some of the Birchwood synthetic oil. If it doesn't work out I will go dry. Thanks

No oil,dry like was said.

There is a product called CLP, cleaner, lube, protectant. AR users like it. If you check in the archives I believe Alaska Cajun used it.

I used it a lot in the Army. Not very good in extreme cold. The military has an oil called LAW. Lubricant, arctic weapons. I haven't seen it in a while.

I use castrol 2 cycle oil on the trail, wipe on, wipe off, and use.....never a problem or rough spot.

Anything with TCW3 (whatever that is) labled on it , lube oil wize, wont freeze.

Gas from my snowgo or boats tank is pretty good solvnt while Im at it....

I’ve never used it on a gun specifically, but ATF is a good general cold weather fluid. I’ve seen a lot of gear case, chain and hydraulic oil replaced with ATV on arctic industrial equipment. But I agree that dryer is better. Use minimally if you really need it.

Run mine dry. Don’t have quite the cold as most of those who have replied, so far.

any more I just use diesel fuel to clean guns in winter. Only time I would use any oil is if I was shooting it a lot like sighting in or some other non hunting thing. Had too many gun failures in real cold temps and figure what is a couple of shots without oil going to do to wear out a gun vs. a moose or wolf on the ground.
