Anyone like trump card games? My favorites are Hearts and Beau Ray, a betting game based on match the pot.

Of course, you can bet in Hearts too. Penny a point or some such.

Double Pinochle. It's been awhile.

Not an easy game to learn, but easier than passing the tman grammar test grin

Learned from Korea war vets that played for a dollar a point.

And yuker (sp?), the WW2 vets played for drinks.

No betting for me, Grandmas strict rule BHS.

We have starated to play 'salad'lately. I like it because each hand has a different objective. Hearts used to be my favorite.

Yes, Trump has good game.
Calling them.
Really flushing them out.
Alot of them are folding.
No hearts.
All about the spades.

We play a game called Cinch.
You can bid 0,1,2,3,4,or shoot it, or blind shoot it.

I know that this wasn't the orig intent of the thread, but much like politics I am way off track. smile

FYI. Most of these games are based off of bridge.

If you don't play bridge, think of it as an advanced game of Bid Euchre.

The difference between bridge and Euchre is that you purposely bid to tell your partner what you have and can work it out ahead of time.
i.e. if I bid 1 No Trump (going high card in Euchre) it means that I have something then you my partner bids knowing that I have that. i.e. knowing I have a lot of face cards.
When it comes back around I can bid 2 hearts and then you know that I have a lot of face cards in hearts.
Everyone bids twice in bridge.

Its legal table talk with your partner.

"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The forcing notrump is a bidding convention in the card game of bridge. In Standard American bidding, the response of 1NT to an opening bid of 1 heart; or 1 spade; shows 6 to 9 high card points (HCP) and is non-forcing."

I think people don't play cards as much as they used to. I know it's true in my family. A lot of the old marathon card players in my clan have passed on to that pearly card table in the sky.

While I can't claim to enjoy any card games; the most common one from where I grew up was Smear. I'm really surprised it hasn't been mentioned.

The current most common seems to be Cribbage. Although it isn't a trump game, I think if fits the spirit of the thread.

I heard about a game where you can use cards from other decks, even if they don't match the deck you're using, change the rules as you go,and the winner is the one can wave there hands around and babble on and make the most unbelievable statements.
I think the name of the game is
Nancy

This thread needs archived. James said it above. Card playing is going the way of the harness maker and public telephone.

When I was a kid the Saturday night entertainment was poker. Grandma, an aunt and uncle, and mom ,dad, and myself all played penny poker. Everyone had one of those metal tins the hard candy came in full of pennies, no one lost anything and everyone had a good time.

Couldn't help but look myself. Saw James' name and was wondering how long him or the thread would last. Finally looked. Cards are fun. Too much thought and strategy for the young people of today? Or just not electronic enough? Times and people are changing, which they always do, but not always for the better.

I wonder if smear and sheepshead are the same game, MN and WI people? I used to play sheepshead at least once a week when I was young, now it is poker with grandkids.

I'll have you know I come from a long line of good baptists. Card playing is sinful, we played Rook. LOL

Seriously, granny wouldn't allow a deck of playing cards or dice in the house. Mama's people though resolved that difficulty with a deck of Rook cards. So we stayed up all hours of the night playing rook. When the aunts and uncles and all the cousins got together there might be three games going at once.
And God help you if you played against my grand dad Tommie and his twin brother Commie, they had a twins secret code language going.
