Have you ever used worms for crappie? I’ve used my share of worms for bluegill and catfish, and I’ve caught a few crappie on worms as incidentals, but I’ve never targeted them using worms. Do you like to fit it all on the hook or leave some dangling to entice bites?

Other than shiners and Minnows, what other live baits are your favorites for crappie, and do you prefer minnows over shiners?

I've caught quite few on green worms that we find in moist ground, in cool spring weather, where the soft maple (not the hardwood sugar maple) leaves pile up. These are not catalpa worms. They do have a loud smell. Every fish I'm aware of eats them readily. Coons and possums dig them up also. I put the whole thing on a hook. I can catch more crappies jigging than I do with minnows. Most of the time.

I like a jigging spoon with a crappie minnow, pinched off behind the gills so the guts dangle out a bit. I also use wax worms on a small jig with a plastic twister tail or similar. Sometimes 2 waxies on the hook is killer.

Catalpa worms work well on crappie, otherwise minnows are the most reliable bait.

But some days if using Minnie's you have to turn your back to bait the hook!!!!!!

I use a 1/16 or 1/8 ounce jig head with a small solid plastic grub with multiple tails like a tube jig. I don't like tube jigs because they don't stay put on the hook. I'll use paddle tails if they want something bigger.
The key for me is to have the jig/grub under a bobber to maintain a specific depth. A crappie suspends at a specific depth and rarely will go deeper to take a bait, but will come up a short distance to take the bait.
Another key for using something other than live bait (minnows) is to keep the bait moving ever steady and slow. Sometimes the only way to get the speed and steadiness right is by drifting or slow trolling.

Biggest crappie I ever caught, about a dozen, were caught on a minni fat rap behind a twin blade lake troll called a beer can, gold and silver. The rapalla was black over silver. The fish were all females full of eggs. They all weighed close to three pounds apiece. They were almost as long as a gott ice cooler lid. Lake Roosevelt Arizona. Late March, early April I can't remember which. They were HUGE!

That statement about drifting or slow trolling was right on spot on a Mississippi river back water this August. Was trolling with two lines out trying to locate the fish, a couple of times I would get two on at once. I would drop a marker buoy then try to jig the "school" would't catch a fish. I then would go back to trolling and catch fish. So I just stayed with the trolling, you got to "scratch where it itches".

Minnows. Last year I was outfished on the same weed bed 10 to 1. I was trying worms. Brother used minnows. It was sad. From now on I use minnows, and troll with cotton cordells

Don't do anything you don't want to explain to the paramedics. I do appreciate a good story tho.

I tend to catch more crappie using jigs than live bait. Besides minnows I've had good success with crickets.

Myself I don't think crappies are very good live bait at all, Way too fragile and die easy on the hook. I'll stick with bullheads. laugh

We used to troll or drift with a 3 way rig.

3 way swivel - 3 foot dropline with 1/8 oz jig head, 2" curly tail grub; 2 foot leader with 1/32 oz jighead with crappie tube

The bottom jig would pick up perch, top line crappie.

Just happy to be here.

I have two lakes where summertime half a nightcrawler out performs minnows by a large percentage and waxworks over minnows in winter. Even the plus 1# fish. Each body of water can be its own challenge for best presentation/bait.

I like jigging over live bait. one that works great for me are Cubby jigs. they are the ones in the tube by the register. suspended under a float is killer.
