This is from the other day. It will become more apparent what I'm doing as this progresses. This machining is all for the horizontal micro adjust and the vertical lock mechanism. They will be one combined unit sticking out the side instead or the vertical lock sticking out the front.

First I turn a piece of aluminum stock down to .750" and thread it. I then turn one end down to .600" This will allow the vertical locking ring to slide over the end Then I drill and ream it halfway through with a .375" drill and ream. The threading on the outside is for the vertical lock. Then, I part that off, flip it around and tap the other end at .312 this will be for an internal and external threaded post that will attach this to the T-nut through the site. I may shorten this a little by facing off some of the outer threading end so it doesn't protrude as much. I haven't decided yet. Here's a bunch of pics of that machining process:

So with that complete, I make the plunger that will go into the last piece and hold the pin under tension from a compression spring. This will be the part that turns and actually adjusts the pin. Just basic turning here. The piece is also knurled and tapped out to the pin size. Pics of that process:

Here are the pieces laid out. It may give you an idea of what is going on. I'll post more as I complete things:

Well, I finished the micro adjust and the horizontal lock today. Just basic lathe work. Some turning, tapping and knurling for the lock. I have a bunch of pictures of that:

Here is everything laid out and put together. The only thing missing yet is a stainless steel post that will attach the T-nut to the adjustment knobs. I have to drill out a bolt for that yet but I can put it all together just to show what it will look like. The adjustment knobs seem to stick out pretty far but I believe it's under 2". Now I have to machine the attachment arm, a lock for that, a top plate to cover the T-slot and a guard for the pin. The micro adjust was a little trickier to figure out than I expected. It works good though. It's also a tad bulky but it sure should be plenty rugged.

I was making chips out in the shop today. I got the guard roughed out. I had this chunk of large aluminum angle hanging around and figured even though it's not quite as long as the entire sight, it will work well.

Like anything you put in the mill, the first thing was to square it up. I won't bore you with that. It's the same as everything else, just face cuts until I have square stock. Then I cut the windows on the guard out. First the side, then the front. Since this is one piece of angle, it should remain pretty strong.

Here is the site guard finished.

I have not drilled and tapped the holes to mount it to the sight but this is what it will look like once mounted.

I think that I will probably bevel most of the edges on this sight. It will make it lighter (it's getting a bit heavy) and a look a little less like a high school shop project. grin One things for sure though. You'll be able to park a truck on this when it's finished. smile

Well, I finished making parts today and put this all together. I have some sanding, degreasing and fine tuning to do yet. I am going to anodize it black in the next couple weeks. It's pretty hefty, I don't have to worry about it breaking that's for sure. It weighs just under a pound. It's heavy but my bow just sits on a hook until I'm ready to take a shot anyway so other than walking to the tree stand, it's a nonissue. First today, I milled the arm for attaching it to the bow. It's adjustable with four settings, all drilled and tapped. It is also dovetailed at 60 degrees. I had to tilt the head on the mill to achieve the dovetail since I didn't have the correct end mill.

Next was the lock for the arm. It's just basic lathe work like I have shown in other pictures. Turned, knurled and threaded to fit the arm.

Now it was time to counter bore, drill and tap everything to put this all together.

And here it is all put together.

Haven't tried them. Goldnut does that but from what he says, it's not very durable. I've been wanting to try anodizing anyway and I figure this would be a good project to try it out on.

Now you'll have to make 4 more sight pins. Nice job!!! That should last a long time unless your bow has a lot or torque.

From a Tool Maker, I will say you did a fine job. Aluminum is fun to work with.

Yea, I like working with aluminum, it's like the clay of metal work. This stuff must have been pretty pure, it was very soft and would gum up the tooling, I prefer an alloy. The metal I hate to machine is stainless on a lathe, hard to break a chip and your making 1000's of razor blades. That stuff can be nasty.

Trouble is that I would have to sell them for about $1000 each to make it profitable for my time. grin That's a lot of hours sitting there.
