I asked this same question in trapping only but thought I would hedge my bet and ask here as well. Any help would be awesome.

I need some help. I recently got contacted by a friend to remove a problem red fox from his property, the issue I am running into is he has quite a few barn cats as well as chickens, geese. Among other critters. I think with the variety of non-target animals that he has my best bet is going to be a live trap so I don't injure any of his critters. My question is what size of live trap works best for Red Fox (in Wyoming, not sure if that makes a difference)? And what are some tips and tricks for live trapping that I could employ on a Red Fox? Pictures would be welcome too if anyone has any. Thanks for all the help and the great reading on this site.

In most cases, I talk the people into leaving the foxes alone, as they typically move in town to have litters under sheds and decks to escape coyote predation. Usually gone in 8 to 10 weeks. However, in the cases where the foxes are killing chickens or causing the house to smell so bad you gag, I'll move them. Always had the best luck with older cages with open wire (larger seems better, such as 1x2). I catch pups or adults in anything 10x12x30 or larger. Rarely needed to use a 15x15 cage to catch foxes. Also, I do NOT brush the traps. Just like fur trapping, foxes like to be in a very open area, not confined or in places where they can't see their surroundings. I've used everything from hot dogs to Arby's curly fries.... the urban foxes seem to respond to anything edible. Not sure how the rural ones would respond. I'll include a couple pics, showing traps NOT covered with brush, and larger wire size.

One of 4 pups caught from under a large deck at a lake house.

Thank you Ron, I appreciate the information. All I'm hoping to do with this fox is relocate it to a more suitable location, so this is good to know, especially about not brushing in traps. Just curious, if you were after a bobcat would you not brush in the trap or would you run the set up different for that? Thanks again

Using a sweet bait will normally not attract cats...IME

IF possible slid the trap back and forth so the dirt will cover the wire or if the ground is to hard do it by hand. I also like to hang the bait so they can not just stretch out with out tripping the pan. JMO

I've caught coyotes in leg hold traps using marshmallows. (There was other bait but the traps hadn't been touched in a month until I added the marshmallows.) I'd assume fox might go for these and cats are less likely to go for them than other baits. (Some weird cats will go for them, which I found out the hard way when I caught one in a leg hold coon trap.)

Hobbs:
I forgot to tell you, make sure the trap does not rock or tip. IF the trap moves the fox will not go all the way in the trap. Fur trappers call it bedding the trap.

ALWAYS do these things....I hang bait in a lil cup made from a water bottle bottom.

This is all great information. I fur trap as well so bedding a trap is ingrained in my thought process no matter what trap I set. Thanks again everyone.

I like some of the ideas mentioned thus far.
What are some of the better ways to hang the bait, and do you put some bark or mossy type substance on top of the cage to help keep rain off the bait?

The foxes I catch in cages are usually in subdivisions so I just toss my Wickenkamps down and bait with cans of
cat food. I've only caged a couple hundred.
