A buddy and went calling coyotes the other day. Temps were in the teens below with light wind. First stand, a big male came in and my buddy killed it. Good start. Next stand, we walked down a road that hadn't been traveled in a long time. went in about 1/2 mile and I set up on a high snow drift and he went another 200 yards downwind to a blown down tree. looked like an incredible spot with some scattered woodlots,a large cattail slough and a crp field within veiw. Seeing all the tracks on the way in, we had a feeling Started out with a lone howl, waited a bit than went to group howls. Only into the stand for maybe 3 minutes when I looked to the east and 1/2 mile away coming across a wide open dirt field came 5 coyotes all lined up abreast and coming hard.
When they hit the 80 yard mark, I shot the first coming head on and it crumped face in the dirt. At the shot, the other 4 scattered and I went into auto-pilot. Can't quite but the details into words as it all became a blur but I shot 5 times and knocked down 5 coyotes. My friend down the line got to see it all and his comment was" holy . that looked like a western movie" Have killed Tripps and even a quad before but never a quint. After dragging them all out, we were so sweated up, we decided to call it a day.
Got a good buddy that's a member here that's been putting up my hides this year and has been doing a great job at it. He's really liking what the 17-204 does in terms of fur damage.

Great job Bucks... Sure beat my best! Sure liking what you can do with that caliber, I'd have one in a heartbeat if I didn't have to reload for it. Great accomplishment my friend.

Would have been nice if you had a GoPro. The video would have been short but sweet.

Outstanding shooting....once in a lifetime experience that would have been so cool to have on video.

that just got 50% more impressive that you did it with a bolt gun
I have shot timed qualifications with a bolt gun and can do it but I need every last second running with a semi auto after doing it with a bolt almost felt like cheating.

The beauty of that wildcat caliber is its laser flat. I think he told me he is dead on the fur out to 400 yards.

Thanks Osky. He must be too good to talk to me now! Oh he'll chime in John. Very good shooting for sure. Maybe more important was a good eye for the set up. To get yourself in quietly to a raised position, and get 5 coming into your lap across a naked field in good proximity to each other... Things really came together. I think Bucks said he walked in nearly 1/2 mile to his shooting/calling position. There is a big part of the lesson. Most successful shootists I know always work it best by getting away from the vehicle. Osky

I have been putting up some of Bucks fur this winter and really impressed with the lack of fur damage with that 17-204 . when he called Saturday and told me about the quin he got I figured it must have got pretty western . expected some less than perfect shot placement but when I peeled them yotes four of them were anchored in the chest with minimal to no damage and the fifth was hit by the bun hole and came out the ribs . the only one I stitched was the last one and it didn't take much floss . impressive caliber in the hands of a man that knows how to use it

Yes, a day time stand. Bout 10 a.m. Don't have any pics Hi John, was a fun stand for sure! Last shot was about 225. Sask, it holds 4 in the mag but I can only put in 2 or it sometimes won't feed proper. I have a cartridge Carrier on the stock and have got quick and pulling them out and loading. I had to do that on this stand. Tac, I slowed it down to about 4150 thanks again guys

Congrats man! Good thing you didn't take pics...once upon a time I too shot a quint, but years later I was showing somebody the photographic proof of my feat and it turned out it was just a triple!
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

DHH, thanks for taking the time for putting up the fur. You're doing a great job for being new to it!! Life's chores get in the way but hopefully we can get together for a day of calling someday
