Isn't that what causes inflammation in the intestines?

Inflammation of the tissue, lining the inside of the abdomen and covering the organs. It's caused by bacteria or fungi.
Nasty stuff.
Prayers sent.

I do peritoneal dialysis, which means that I put a dextrose mixture into my peritoneal cavity (stomach area) and it pulls out the waste that your kidneys are supposed to filter out. I have a tube coming out of my abdomen that I use as a port for this, the tube basically comes out of an open hole. I have to keep it covered and can't swim or take a bath, only showers, and I have to be careful in real dusty or dirty situations. Peritonitis is pretty common in these situations, and yes it can be fatal. I monitor everything closely for any signs of infection and this was caught before any severe physical symptoms showed, just an elevated white blood cell count. I will treat it with an antibiotic cocktail that I inject into my dialysis fluid and let it dwell for 6 hours every day for the next 5 days until the culture tests come back so we can narrow down the treatment if the initial cocktail does not work.
Hopefully by catching it early and getting the antibiotics going quickly I will miss most of the more severe pain and hospitalization. The bad thing, in my opinion is that once you have it you seem to be more susceptible to it in the future. If I should get a call for a transplant in the next few days I will have to turn it down because of the infection, so that sucks also.
