I have a question I'm hoping some of you more experienced bait makers can answer. I'm making an early season beaver meat bait and want to include a lot of fat and gristle into it. Will the SB work on preserving the fat and gristle or would I be better off just freezing the bait fresh and just thawing out what I need a little at a time?

It will fix it. Critters crave fat as they need lots of it to go go go and to stay warm. That's why beaver tail oil and skunk oil and fish oil work so well. It's all fat. I always throw lots of fat in with the meat when making beaver meat bait. I personally taint a little bit and freeze it. It doesn't go much further once I pull it out for trapping season since it's cold. 2.5 gallon bucket full and it won't taint much more from when I that it for use until the end of trapping season even down here in this warm humid swamp

Fat will preserve its self over time, it would be best to do it in separate batchs. Taint your meat and then preserve it at your desired smell. Then add your rendered fat let sit mix together for awhile so the two can bond

Right now the meat and fat have only been sitting a couple of days in above freezing weather. The meat isn't tainted yet, but will likely get that way by the weekend unless I put it all in the freezer. Right now I don't have room. I'm pulling furs out to put up and with my back its a slow process. I think I will take your advice Tony and separate the meat and fat because I want to run it all through the grinder. I generally just chunk up my beaver meat bait, but I already have several gallons chunked up and want to make some different early season bait with fresh meat, but with a sweet castor and fat content. Something to get those young dumb coyotes fighting to get to the set.

Yeah my chunk bait looks like it has a nice brown gravy on it and the insides are a real nice medium rare. Buddy always says that you don't want to go on the line hungry cause some of the bait looks good enough to eat.

I saved 4 gallons from scraping beaver, rats and mink in a 5 gallon bucket and put a Gamma seal on it. let it set for 3 years behind the shed until the rot mellowed. Scooped the oil of the top for Lure base. The rest Has the consistency of peanut butter. Added salt to fix it. Great late season paste bait.
