I am new to trapping, I have learned that location is everything where I am seeing coyote sign is in the roads and green patches. The green patches are where I am wanting to start, would the pipe dream set be the best set with there being no backing in the open grass fields? I have also read on here where this the set for snow and ice but I am in south Alabama and that will not be a problem . Also I have not seen anything on the pipe dream being used in the spring through early summer , any advice and help will be greatly appreciated.

Should be a good bet....it was mostly developed for inclement weather, which for you I'd assume would be rain. Give it a shot....

I know guys that use it throughout the year.....I see NO reason why it won't be just as effective spring and summer.

I'd put something in the pipe they want to lick or bite or chew or pull....you won't need the strong, rank skunky stuff of winter.

I've heard guys having luck with bacon grease alone in the warmer months....

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the info , will be getting in the woods shortly . So here is my plan 1 pipe dream set and 1 dirt hole per green field does this sound like a good start the coyotes come regular to them and some fields are larger and can set more , so my question use both have read where both are used in the same area . I have Cavens Minnesota Red bait and violator 7 lure and 1 more lure cant remember the name of it is that going to be to strong for this time of the year?

Go light with the strong lures in warm weather, as in just enough to cover the end of a tooth pick. Don’t ignore the mans advice on the bacon grease!

Minnesota Red is red fox gland lure...not bait.

The guy that owns the lease I've been trapping wanted me to wait till after deer season to trap coyotes. With that being said, since deer season has gone out we have had spring / summer like weather down here already. I have mostly been using dirt hole sets and a few flat sets. I also use the same bait that you mentioned and have done ok, but felt like I needed to try something else. I made some pipe sets and I used natural food source "squirrel and deer". I stuffed some deer or squirrel down in the pipe and then put the squirrel tail or deer hide sticking out where it could be seen. Not saying that processed baits dont work, I just felt like they have been feeding on deer for so long that's what they wanted. The next few days it really paid off. I've just recently got back into trapping and this forum has had a lot of good info. I grew up trapping in the bayous for coon, rats and bob cats and these coyotes will test your patience! Coyotes are tuff no matrer where you trap, but down here I think simple, natural is better. So to answer your question, pipe set has worked for me in the south, and temps are still climbing. Should be 80* tomorrow. I'm no expert on baits and lures but so far I'm doing well with natural bait. I just wish I had saved more hide and neck meat during deer season! Take care, watch out for snakes! I've Already had 2 close encounters w/ some big timber rattlers!

I am just getting traps out tomorrow myself had to wait on deer hunters also. I was getting things together for trapping during deer season and did not even think about saving some hide and scraps and hide
Thanks for the advice just a thought we are hog hunting right now you think hog hide would work most of what we catch is black not a lot of flash ?

Hard to say about hog, I just had an old farmer tell me that when he is moving his equipment up and down county roads he sees coyotes feeding on deer carcass in the middle of the day! Scraps that had been thrown out by deer hunters or deer that had been hit by a vehicle. Bottom line is all winter long they have fed on dead deer and other road kill. I would just shoot a few squirrels and throw them in the freezer or get a rabbit or two and that should do what u need to do. I've learned that a small amount of bait goes a long way. Something else to consider, last month I caught 2 coyotes in my 1.5 coil spring traps that I had set for coons. I used the small 3/4 pvc pipe w/ a short 90* on it, baited w/ sardines and fish oil around the pipe. And the funny thing is, I barley had the traps covered w/ pine straw! Be sure to look back over the forum for different sets and baits used by the heavy hitters. I'm just an old " part time trapper" learn something new every day.
