Well. Went out and checked the line today. We've had a lot of southeast winds bringing warm weather and overflow. My first set was a snare I put for a couple otter going in and out of a hole alongside the river. All the snow we had though covered up the area. I did see not too far away though where he came in and out again, so I put a 160 there. I also reopened the hole the snare was at and put a 160 there too. Sorry, no pics of the sets. I'm really hoping to connect soon on those. Nice fat otter too. Wide track.

My first wing set for a big lynx was empty. No new tracks in the area. Not sure if he/she moved on, but I reset the trap and snare. Did that for a few other sets until I ran into a set with a kitten in it. Small bugger. But I'll take what I can at this point in the season, seeing as I got off to a late start. I also remade a couple other sets.

This is a snare behind the next picture's set.

This is a new set. Has a CD, wing, bait, mentholadem in the wing. We'll see how it produces.

This a nice big one. Not sure if it's a male or female. How do you guys tell?

I need to make me a choke pole or bring a long, whacking stick. I had my Eastwing axe, which is quite short. And let me tell you, getting that close to a big cat that's hissing and growling at you is something else. Kind of questioned myself a couple times there when its ears were pinned back and its eyes were focused on killing me. But, I got er done.

This next pic is a remake of the set. Got some beaver castor piece on that bait.

I put a fence and snare not too far from this set. Just incase they decide not to set foot on the trap.

We have some better weather coming in the next few days, so hopefully will connect again soon.

Now that you have Lynx, Use your Lynx carcass as bait.
Best Lynx set there is imo, I struggled to catch Lynx the first three years. Now I just use marten carcass tied to tree right next to the trail where I see Lynx tracks in the early winter. Doesn't get them all but half ide say. Once you get some I skin them and chop a carcass into three pieces. Shoulders front, rear legs back and rib cage stomach. Now you have three excellent baits that need no lure and in my area no Lynx but maybe a kitten will pass this by. I don't think they want to eat it, I think they are just attracted to the huge cat smell coming off of it. Works for me on my small trapline I've caught 20 cats so far this year. I would not buy lure specifically for cats. This time of year anything glandular will get there attention. As far as trap placement goes. It really doesn't seam to be too important. If the Lynx meat is wired in a small spruce a foot from the trail I just set the trap so the snowmobile doesn't snap it as I drive by. Straight out from the bait anywhere from 12-20 inches.
With most baits the Lynx never really gets up on it. With this bait he will walk and sit all over your trap. I rarely miss one when using Lynx meat. The large baits are wired in paws up with the top of the bait reaching 24 inches off of walking surface. I don't use stepping sticks.

Male will have a nut sack right under the vent. When frozen in a snare, I usually look for nipples, sometimes hard to find the other indicators depending on what position they are frozen in.
