My 17 year old son tried to get on the ice after school with some buddies to do some fishing last night. As he was trying to pull his buddy's truck out (deep snow with slick tires), he heard a "woof" under the hood.

He called me right away as I was only a mile or so away at home. When I arrived the flames were 20 feet high. The other truck was
still stuck in the snow right behind his burning rig, so I managed to get it pulled clear with my truck. Then the shotgun shells that were under the seats started going off.

What an ordeal. Liability insurance only as it had 365K miles on it.

My wife's car had an engine fire while we were on the freeway here last year. We got really lucky to be close to a rest stop where there were folks who had water to put it out. I always carry an extinguisher in my rig but hers didn't have one.

I was happy she wasn't alone at night when it happened.

Glad your son and his buddies are OK.

Pete

The good thing everyone is fine but I bet it was a little scary for the boys.

Last year hauling silage for the in-laws the truck quit just as I left the pit and I went to restart it and heard the woof lucky I coasted down the hill and got to a hose to put it out still melted everything plastic/rubber under the hood.

Gland the young man is OK it sucks to lose a truck like that.

Man that sucks.
I'd still check with your insurance company, never know, there might be something they can do.

Ford?

I don't think mine went up that high, don't leave much when they are done burning.

It was a 2003 F150 with almost 400K miles on it. Not worth much if ever he would have tried to sell it, but he's finding out that it's costly to replace.

A lot of insurance companies would not have covered the loss with full coverage because it happened "off road".

Man that stinks.
Few years back an 18 wheeler caught fire on the highway right next to my work (maybe 75 yards from rig to my building). A lot of people were standing next to the windows watching it. I keep telling to get away from the windows as we don't know what's in the trailer. They refused and thought I was an idiot. I said in can have anything under pressure flammable or explosive. Yet they refused. Thankfully no explosion occured the driver had an extinguisher but it was in vain. The cab and 1/3 of trailer were gone

Simply not true. Most insurance companies cover vehicles on the ice and in the event they go through the ice. If yours doesn't you have the worng insurance company.

Something for you to check out when you replace the truck.

On these high miles older vehicles the price between liability and full coverage insurance at least on my policy is not much difference on premium cost.

The truck might not of been worth much but I am guessing you would of got enough to help on a down payment on a new one.

I had a good idea it was a Ford, most that burn are.

Awhile back they had some for problem that was causing them to catch fire, and some were parked in a connected garage that burnt house and all. They had a recall on the ignition switch if i remember right.

(that and oil leaks, Fords are like Harley's in that catagory.)

When I was a senior in highschool, my Ford mustang caught fire, in the school parking lot. It had fire dripping down from underneath. My little brother ran into the school to get a fire extinguisher. My math teacher did not want him to take one and wanted him to call the fire department instead. My brother grabbed a fire extinguisher anyway and ran out with the teacher chasing him. In the meantime, a buddy of mine put the fire out by shaking up a 2 liter bottle of pop and spraying the fire repeatedly.

I am sorry about the loss of your son's truck. I am glad no one was hurt.

Keith
