I caught a squirrel in a tube trap. 55 degrees outside. He was in the trap at least 5 hours before I skinned him, and gutted him. 5 hours.. do you think the meat is ok at 55 degrees?
Just a weekend trapper...

Bait. I wouldn't chance eating it but I'm picky as to how I do game for the table. And I eat a lot of squirrels.

I don't see how it could go bad in that amount of time. I've had a grouse in my truck longer than that In warmer conditions and it was fine.

I had a squirrel that was caught in a perfectly good blind set, so I stuffed him in a hole right next to the trap and turned into a dirthole. He had it coming.

I always skin/clean in the field, and hang the meat from a cut tree branch that looks like a check mark. This cool the meat very quickly, only takes a minute, and allows the woods to settle down.

It's way better than the ones that are killed at 7:30 A.M. and cleaned at 10:30 A M. in August. This is the same thing I was thinking. And those are good for me!
