FYI I got 5 sources telling me that King fishing will be closed on the Susitna drainage including the Deshka this year. No catch and release, no anything. Guess they will have to helicopter you to ship creek.
Huge shame. Only trip I took to AK was in 2005. Spent a week flying to a different place each day. The Susitna drainage was where we focused. Day One I caught the biggest king anyone had seen or heard of in a very long time. Got my picture with it in Field & Stream magazine. Then again, I almost died bringing it to hand. I jumped in the river to fight it and got swept downstream. Best photo was my legs sticking straight up out of the river. But it was no joke, as I crashed through and under every raker and boulder field whitewater for a half mile or more. Amazing I did not get hung up on those rakers. When I washed up on a sand bar way down stream, the fish was also washed up, and also about dead. The rod was broken in half and I had been fighting it from the reel the last couple hundred yards. My waders were filled with ice cold water. I had been mostly under water the last couple hundred yards, I couldn't move, was puking up water. But I got that huge fish. I hate to think that experience could not happen again for someone else. What a sad situation. :-(
