I just cut down a couple cherry trees on my fence line. The logs seem too nice to just cut up for firewood. The diameter on the butt end range from 9-10" to 14-16". Is there any value in these as they are straight with no branches for 12-16 ft on each tree. Also there are a couple small burls on the branches of the trees. I would like some ideas otherwise I will be cutting it for firewood.

Thanks
Jason

You might see if there is a buyer or broker nearby who would be interested in them.

Put the logs on Craigslist and see if there is any takers. Show some clear pictures of the logs and give their dimensions. Small, hobby sawmills and woodworkers may buy them and they pay more than the commercial mills.

Price the logs by looking for ads for similar logs and price slightly higher. You can always go down on price, if they don't sell in a few weeks.

I like them for firewood and BBQ's. They smell like 1/2-1/2 or Cherry blend pipe tobacco. Those small sizes will yield a lot of white growth wood and less heartwood than is practical. Would make great spindles, Pool Q's.

If you are in southern Wisconsin, try to contact the Deppeler wood shop. Jason deals in hardwood and he might have a use for them.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I am central Wisconsin. Looking at the logs they seem way to nice to just cut up that's why I was looking for some options.

If the trees were on a fence line... do they have any wire in them? I am in south central WI and my neighbor has a small mill. Not sure if it would be worth anyone's time if it is just a couple logs.

No they are completely clean on any nails or fencing. I will be moving the fence this year and started cleaning up some trees that will be in the way.

Once upon a time, before Jason took over the wood shop they had a market for basswood too. He still might if it's enough to be worth it.

Cherry is a premium furniture wood. Cherry is stronger and tougher than oak. Awhile back I noticed on Ebay a few cherry boards were selling for surprising prices.
If I had those logs I would try to find a local mill and have them sawn into boards . Then I would store them in an attic or barn for a few years while I planned what projects to use them for. If you didn't want to use them yourself there are always wood workers looking for dry cherry lumber.

Had about a 14" DBH log I had some 6/4 planks center cut out of.

Made this.

I call it a "Shoe Bench" .
It stands about 3 " taller than a chair. Works good for taking shoes on and off.

This would be a good plan ^. I sure wouldn't burn it if I had it.

I would store them someplace where they could dry a bit before having them cut into dimensional lumber. This would also give you time to decided what you want to do with them. If you decide to keep them I would suggest finding a mill with a band saw since you have smaller logs. Band saws have a finer cut so less waste and more lumber. Yes cherry is also great for smoking, but I would use some of the larger branches you cut off for that instead of the nice logs.

I got my hands on a cherry blank or two for turning powder horn base plugs on my lathe.

Thanks for all of the replies. I will be taking pictures as well as measurements tomorrow to post on Craigslist. There are also a few Amish in my area I may talk to as well.

That is beautiful.

I've been thinking of putting something similar in my entryway by the front door for the same purpose you stated.

Do not cut them into firewood. Follow the advice of others and bring them inside to season them and view them as an investment as someone will want them sooner or later.
If you want to sell them, check online for board foot price for cherry as all of that is like gold now, and there are always people looking for quality wood.
As you mentioned burl wood, that is the prize of wall wood and commands the premiums as it produces the most beautiful patterns for table tops.
It may take some time to get your price, but you will get it eventually, but please do not burn this wood as there is enough other wood out there of low quality and certain hardwoods deserve to be made into furniture to be enjoyed for hundreds of years.
