I have a farm and am having trouble with moles and/or voles in a couple of my fields. I know there are mole traps but it looks like I would need a bunch of them and they aren't cheap. Any suggestions with a reasonable approach?

Big difference between moles and voles. Difference in traps, baits, kind of damage. Describe the damage or show pictures. If moles, don;t need a lot of traps. Just need them in the right place.

Jim, I'm not at the farm now, won't be for a while. They create tunnels and the ground hooves up where they go. The entrances are maybe 3" in diameter. Locals say it's voles, but I don't know. They're active in my clover fields. One is in a bottom and the other is on a ridgetop. Wish I could send pictures.

If they exit the tunnel above ground, they are Voles. Moles will make the runs, and you should have evidence of what we call " volcanoes", where there will be a little mounds of dirt along the tunnel system. The Voles will use the same tunnels as the Moles, but will have exit holes where they come out to travel and feed. Look for clipped areas around the entrance/exit areas. The Voles don't like to expose themselves to predators and will feed close there. I am certainly no expert on them like some on here, but have good results by setting a couple Rat Snap traps as close to the hole as you can, and then covering them with a 5 gallon bucket. The bucket will keep the sets working in inclement weather, out of sight of people, and keep non-targets from firing the traps. If it gets windy we set some weight on top to keep the buckets in place. If it's Moles also you are after, there are a couple guys on here that specialize in them that can help also. Hope this helps.

When I get back to the farm I'll try the traps. They are messing with 2 fields totalling about 3 acres so I have my work cut out for me. It seems they only become a problem once cold weather sets in, otherwise I don't notice the tunnels as much.

One successful way is to set victor mouse traps in a “tunnel” as shown in the video below. The tunnel can be made of cardboard; not too good in wet weather. Coroplast will last longer. Coroplast can often be purchased from local sign making companies. Some folks have used modified metal rain gutter material.

Our local vole is the Pine vole (Microtus pinetorum)

Moles are basically blind, and have HUGE front feet, Voles look like a short tailed mouse with a snipey nose.
