How fresh do the water trapping experts on here think this sign is? It's a birch tree with a bunch of old as well as newer sign (like this one) around with a few good runs in it. To my novice eye it looks at least within the last week or so. I got some 330s and 280s set up in the beaver runs nearby today so hopefully tomorrow I will have a beaver or two in the traps.

No clearly after 5 in the morning as the beaver was still adjusting to day light savings.

Probably a month or so old. Some trees and weather can delay or speed up the yellowing of the cuts

Thanks guys. Found a couple nice pinch points where downed trees lay over the runs and put the traps under the downed trees. Whether the traps are full or empty tomorrow, still a fun day. Also have 12 muskrat traps set, about half of which are baited with carrots and the others in front of bank dens.

Really depends, could even be from last fall...it doesn't matter it's spring and Traps in runs nearby or castor sets should connect!

If there are beaver there now they are coming out of the water somewhere to cut those trees. Find and set those places.

might sound dumb but think of them as more of a rutting buck or elk right now instead of a beaver.

One of the things I will look for when deciding if beaver is still in the area is fresh droppings on the bottom of the stream, pond, against and along the dams etc.

Well the good news is that a beaver swam into a Belisle 280 I had set up in the water in front of a bank slide leading to a food pile on the bank. The bad news is that I am an idiot and forgot to take the safeties off. The other 280 and 330 I had set up in runs I remembered to take the safeties off but they were unsprung. I think on one of them the beaver went to the side of the trap where I failed to notice an opening under the log I had it set up on. Blocked that opening off nice and good so the only opening is through the Belisle 330 ... or out of the water and over the log. We will see, tomorrow.

What??? How deep are your creeks?? I do not trap lakes here. Those bright brown dropping show up well on the bottom when fresh!

I trapped one small creek ( narrow stream) that had so much beaver poop floating that it looked like algae!

Nessmuck Around here we have had much of the wooded areas taken out. A farmer/landowner will say he wants to show me where the beaver are and all you have to look for is the little groves of willow along the water. That is where the beaver are.

Mostly bank dens. I did a beaver removal for the city on one of their retention ponds. It had 3 huts on it and I was surprised to see that.

Some of the bank dens get so build up with sticks and mud they look like smaller lodges.
