I'd like to take my future stepson out next season for his first trapping venture. He's 8 now, and darn near as strong as I am, so I'm not too worried about the physical side of things, but don't really want him getting bummed if he doesn't connect.

Was thinking about giving him some 1 or 1.5 coils, along with his own trap tags. Anything else I should plan on including? We'll probably raid my bait stash right before leaving.

Thanks all.

The starter kits from FNTpost are pretty cool for a beginner. It gives them their own equipment and the price isn't terrible... Just an idea.

It's a trappers life for me

A good pair of boots and gloves. When my daughter started trapping with me she would sit in the living room with a new 1 1/2 coil spring, open it, set it and then fire it off to get use to it. When trapping season came around it was second nature to her, never seemed intimidated by it at all. She would tell you just don't wipe your nose on your glove after using fish oil. LOL.

2X. Also give him the best opportunity to catch something fairly quick. When my son was 10 he insisted on setting a 110 in a dry ditch. Nothing for a week. Then I took my rat and slide it into his trap. The look on his face was priceless. 30 yrs later he still doesn’t know what I did.

you might think about some fb1 dog proofs also, you can step on them to set them. not much easier than dropping some marsh mellows in and maybe a little lure and sticking them in the ground.
