Have any of you folks had any experience growing mushrooms from the spawn sold by any of the companies like Fields and Forests or Fungi Perfecti? I'm not talking about commercial quantities, just enough for the family to eat.
I'm most interested in lions main and shiitake mushrooms.
I can cut the logs I need. I am trying to decide if I should go with the dowel plugs or some other method.
Any advice?

I have around 50 logs inoculated with the Shiitake plugs and just a few with Lions Mane. The Shiitakes put out some really good flushes around 1 to 2lbs per log per flush. The Lions Mane logs have been inoculated for over a year and have yet to put out a flush yet. My plugs came from Fungi Perfecti.

I also bought the high speed drill bit that goes onto a angle grinder, in my opinion was well worth the money. I cut all my logs in February before sap began to run and then let sit for 2wks. Read that trees have a defense that keeps fungus and mold from growing and letting them sit for 2wks is supposed to eliminate the tree from killing the spawn.

Thanks, Pasadena.
Did you use red oak logs? I read they are preferred for the shiitake and beach for the lions mane.
I plan to cut some oaks soon and I have some beech I can cut if it makes a difference.

It's good to hear from somebody who's tried it for themselves.

Yep, 90% of my logs are red oak and the others are white oak. The reds seem to produce better.
