Was there a specific reason why you think 4 coiling is necessary?

Actually I would question the reason for laminating those traps.

There is a big difference between the stock spring strength of the Dukes vs the Bridgers. Especially after a years use. Can't really treat those two the same.

And yes...whats the reason? Often times just because you do more work on them, doesn't make them better.

There are traps I've laminated and sure wish I hadn't.

RP Martin.
I was concerned that the additional weight of the laminations might slow down the trap. After all of the excellent information people have shared, I think I will try new music wire springs and see how that goes.

Beav. I was concerned about foot damage, especially on red fox. Don't have many greys around here.

Put In a extra swivel or 2 and foot damge will be minimal. File off any sharp edges on the jaw faces and you will be good to go. If these are New traps I wouldn't be changing out the springs.
Are you trapping for the live market or the fur market?

Beav. Currently trapping for the fur market. I may have an opportunity to do some live market in the future. I normally run a swivel at the trap base, one about half way to the end (6-8 inches) and one where I connect the chain on the earth anchor.

I should have asked the question beav did about lamination. I have to work on my reading comprehension skills.
Have you had problems with what you are running now, as in foot damage or are you anticipating a problem. Sorry for all the questions but trying to evaluate your situation.
Edit, I read above your concern for foot damage. I'll be be quiet now.

Kenken....I have found the bigger traps to be more feet friendly on the fox than the smaller ones, personally. Seems they just don't fight the big traps as much.

I let my fox go these days so it's also a concern for me. Oddly enough, I've found my 650s cast jaws fox feet friendly. The best I've found so far. I wouldn't have guess it but its the case.

The problem I have seen when using bigger traps Is the damage you can't SEE. Like ligament and tendon and muscle damage. In the live market this means you come up with a lame fox.

After a few years of use on my MB550's, I just add a 3rd spring. On my tenth year of some of them and never had an issue.

I will 4 coil them before setting them. Then every 2 to 4 yrs replace the springs with music springs and new helper springs.
