With all the hoop-lah this weekend, I exercised my rights yesterday and bought a new .223 with a threaded barrel.

And then I'm going to use it to pursue some of these-until i can set more traps come next October.

One of my favorite calibers to shoot.

So I topped the Ruger with a vortex 3-9x40, bore sighted and sighted in at 100 yards with 1/2 to 3/4 groups with fiochi 50grain vmax ammo. Very happy with this gun. Then last night, go to a gun raffle at a local fire company and I won a savage axis 7mm-08. Second gun I’ve ever won and the other was at the same raffle over ten years ago. Pretty excited about it. Time to buy another scope-don’t know much about the ballistics of the 7mm-08.

Anybody recommend certain loads for deer? Or scopes? I’m thinking I’ll put a 3-9 on it, not dead set on any particular scope. Like the vortex I bought and have a few nikons that are nice for the price, but wouldn’t be afraid to try another brand- will be used in deer season on drives or on stand.

Congrats on winning the rifle, you lucky dog. 7mm-08 is an outstanding deer round imo. I've had lots of one shot kills with it. I reload for it and use 139 gr hornady bullets, can't recall the powder but I think I use imr4350, not certain and am away from my notes for awhile.

3-9 would be good, I have a 2.5×8 loopy on mine and think they do well together. Can't go wrong either way. Have fun

Nice gun bud, i've never handled one of those, but Ruger usually makes a good gun.

As for the Grey Fox, let that at home and take a shotgun, those buggers will charge ya and come in close. No sewing with a shotgun.

Hey RP-good to know, and yeah I was lucky last night, wasn’t even paying attention and my friends and wife got all excited saying I won. I was thinking 140 grain bullet, I’ll have to look at some loads but good to know, thank you. That sounds like a nice set up with 2.5-8, have a 2-7 on another rifle and it suits me good, not many opportunities for shots over 250 yards for me so don’t need a spotting scope on it, lol. Going to pick it up tomorrow so I’ll buy a scope and rings from dealer since they donate all the guns for the raffle.

Hey hippie-no doubt on the greys, 223 does them no good-just for the coyotes, actually use an 870 with 3” long beard xrs for the fox, drops em out to 70 yards with ease. But most greys come right to caller. Had one sit down and stare at caller this year, pretty cool

The only thing I don't like about my 7mm-08s is the price of the ammo.

You will like it
