Looking to get some quotes. Any one out there with an out door furnace with a good rate willing to give me a number to call would be greatly appreciated.

If it has a UL listing, that should minimize any concern. Frozen pipes are concerns.

I have American Family for all my insurance and have been with then for a long time. When I put my boiler in about 15 years ago they told me as long as it is 30+ feet from any building it would not affect my rates. This may have changed, you may want to check into it.

Call a couple of local independent agents and see what they recommend. They will have a good idea on who can handle wood stoves in your area.

Most insurers need an inspection of wood stoves to be sure they are professionally installed according to building codes (or their own proprietary underwriting requirements).

Outdoor wood boilers aren't a big issue for most insurance companies since they are outdoors and away from outbuildings. A wood stove in a home is a bigger issue. A wood stove in an out building, especially a garage is a no-no. I don't know of any companies that will insure you with a wood stove in your garage.

Why is that? How about a attached garage ?

Check Safeco insurance co. We just checked all over the place and wow, I'm glad to pay Safeco now after various quotes came in. And they have a $500.00 deductible. And i have a wood stove in the fur shed. Only thing they all ways check is if it's got a triple wall pipe threw the roof.

Attached garage is even worse than a detached garage for the reason it can involve the house as well.
Problem is in a garage where you park your vehicles, there are gas fumes and usually combustibles. A spark from a wood stove can ignite a fire. A wood stove can radiant much more heat than a gas heater, especially if it happens to be a barrel stove. BTW, gas heaters are fine with most companies.

I've had two garages burn down that were started by wood stoves. There was a third one that the fire marshal investigated and couldn't conclusively determine the fire was caused by the wood stove, but suspected it was. The other two there was no doubt.

Don't want to tag on someone else's post but are corn/pellet stoves in the same topic area as wood stoves? Doing an attached garage this summer and had plans of heating it one of the three sources. We have state farm now and I guess I haven't looked into it yet.

Pellet stoves are still wood stoves. At least, the ones around here are. Check with your State Farm agent. You don't want to say you don't have a wood stove in your garage, then have a fire and they deny coverage because you didn't disclose that you had a wood stove in the garage on the application.

Buy one of those suspended gas heaters. Check with your agent. With most companies that's not an issue.

Trapper7 thanks for the info. Was going to talk with them as the time got closer. The garage plans have changed so much we've got to finalize them first. Thought about doing one of the hanging gas heaters but we live in the country and I hate being so dependent on propane. I know prices aren't bad now but im not looking forward to it when they go back up.

Interesting , wonder if it would be different if you didn't keep any gas vehicles or combustibles in it. I know one person that has a block house and atached block garage with a wood stove in it and he ducts the heat into his house. His insurance company ok'd it.

I can see the potential problem in a garage or shed but don't know if it would be statistically worse than all the potential things that could burn a house down. But I guess insurance companies are good with statistics, probably why some of the biggest fanciest buildings in a lot of cities are insurance company's smile

Most fires in buildings with wood stoves are caused by one of two things, chimney problems and fires, or storing combustible materials to close to the stove. Think fire starting materials or the wood itself. There are very few problems if you watch those two things! Insurance companys are gunshy anymore, and will try to wiggle out of everything concerning a wood stove of any kind!

Lowest premium is not always best deal. If they use an independent adjuster his primary responsibility is saving the insurance company money.
I once had a situation with Liberty Mutual where the closest agent was 200 highway miles from my house.
