Anyone have any experience with this hog breed? Ive seen a few for sale on Craigslist in the past. I would like a breeding pair. Their appearance fits perfectly with the image of Destitution Ridge, my ponderosa.
My wife renders a lot of lard. We have jars upon jars of it. Makes the best pie crusts ever and I use to fry fish the few times I catch any. I had been raising Large Black and red wattle breed but sold out when the price was high in this area. I need new pigs.
We raise them. They are the best eating I have found so far. Slower growing but really good mothers. I have had mothers that weigh about 300 still feeding 150 # pigs that are not her own. Lots of lard as had already been said, and very nice lard too. Crossbreeds are very good too if you just want to get a boar, and get a faster grower with a higher meat to fat ratio. Meat is very red, beefy color.
they stayed very fat on very little feed . he fed those four hogs a five gallon bucket every other day .he said the only time they would eat it all in one day was if a cold front was coming in . they seemed more content to forage
My dad got some a couple months age from a guy that breeds them for meat and a few extra to sell I will see if I am get his # and send you a pm if your will to come to so IL to get one they seem to be very dosile even when little they didn’t squill when handled
We have a few Mangalista Berkshire crosses. I like them about 75% Berkshire. Full blood Mangalistas are a very fatty hog. They have an extreme amount of marbling in the muscle. We used to sell a few 100% Mangalistas a month to chefs in the cities but they've all switched to either 100% Berkshire or the 75% crosses. We also grow Red Wattles and crosses between them and Berkshire.
