Look up remay ,its a translucent material made for that purpose. its porous so its breathable and lets moisture in /out. We use it for row covers to get a jump on a lot of different veggies.

when planting lettuce I don't cover the seeds with dirt at all, just lay board or such over them for a few days then move the board, get terrific stands this way. Both are cold tolerant and can be planted anytime after snow melt, imo, if the first seeding doesn't tale or gets frosted simply reseed. Gardening is mainly about persistence.

My beds are just raised dirt and a trench next to it, I cover seedlings with a white fabric tunnel, wire hoops for support, stops most bugs n animals like rabbits, like a green house under it

If I can make it myself, I will!

Grab now, grade later.

You can bow pvc over the beds and clip into either pieces of rebar or conduit clamps. Then pull plastic over the top and clip on. This will increase the temp of the bed, and protect from frost. When the temps rise and stabilize where you need them, just fold up the plastic and pull the pipe out, and store for the fall. You can extend your growing season by a month on either end with this concept.

I can't get this picture to be straight- it's the right way in my system but no on here- Anyway. I do this in my basement. I have tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower, cabbage, flowers- all kinds of stuff. You don't need grow lights. Fluorescent lights work well. I just grow them till the weather is perfect and then harden them off and plant them. It was 12 degrees here today.... We had 14'' of snow last weekend and 3 yesterday. Winter is hanging on this year.

There are thermal covers you can buy online that work great. Lettuce does really well with a cover. If you leave the cover on cauliflower or broccoli till it is ready to eat you won't have the green worms on it.

Just passin through
