Can anyone identify who made these souvenir snowshoes? There is a little story behind them.

A friend of mine was in Fort Yukon during the summer of 1969. He ended up going over to Birch Creek for a while. "Birch Creek Jimmy" really like my friends rain gear, went into his place and came out with some sort of government check and wanted to trade for my friend's rain gear, my friend gave him the rain gear but wouldn't take any payment. A short while later BCJ came back and gave my friend this set of miniature snowshoes. I think BCJ was born in the 1880's.

I don't have the remotest idea about who made them, but they are
patterned after the real thing, even down to the red cranberry dye. The picture below is of a pair made by an Eskimo woman, sometime in the 1960's. Her and her husband trapped in the Brooks Range, and she made all their snowshoes. Not many left that knows how. I always wanted to try making a pair, but just seems like it would be very time consuming, so I never even attempted it. Maybe someday. Thanks Waggler.

James Carroll? He would have been born around 1893 though, I believe. He also wrote a good book, based on his trap line journals, from around 1911-1922.

This was cut and pasted from the USFWS, Yukon Flats website:

"Birch Creek Jimmy was the founder of Birch Creek and was Great Chief among the chiefs in his days. He built a cabin in 1898 at the site of the Hudson’s Bay fish camp. Several years later, he was joined by other extended family members. In approximately 1916, the group moved three miles upstream to the site of the present village. It was used as a seasonal base for harvest activities until the early 1950s, when the establishment of a school encouraged village residents to adopt a more settled way of life."

Different person. Some of the Carroll's are bound to know more though.

Good story. I've seen some stuff that was colored with red ochre. Until Spek mentioned the berry juice I was kinda wondering what coloring might have been used. I couldn't tell from the picture if the decking was laced with babiche or cordage but I'm guessing babiche now that you told the story.
Spek that's a nice set of snow shoes!

There is an old gentleman in Nikolai who makes shoes exactly like the ones Spek has pictured above. Same reddish color too. Quite an art !
