Been working on my powder horn off and on for a while. I'd work on it a bit, get stumped and set it aside. Then I'd get busy and forget about it... Finished sewing the leather on the strap ends yesterday. Today I punched a hole in the strap ends and tied a simple thong on real quick. That spout plug is temporary until I figure out what I want to do about it. May go with a fiddle peg... Haven't made up my mind yet. Mike

Nice work. It'd be nice to see pics of the process as you you built it. I had several. But my phone died along the way and I lost a bunch of them. I may have some on my tablet... I'll just have to look. I have another horn (the mate to the one above) I've started whittling on. I'll try to take pics along the way. Mike

Mike that is a very fine looking powder horn. I have been working on a bison powder horn myself of and on for several years. It takes a lot of elbow grease to get to the beauty point yours is showing.

Jim, how is it working with the bison horn? I have heard they can be difficult to get a good finish on after shaping.

Danny - Very nice powder horn . I still have the first Dixie catalog I ordered - 1979.. I still look forward to their catalogs like a kid and a Montgomery Ward Christmas catalog.
Mike - I have been working on the Bison horn the hard way. When I was a young boy I knew a old rancher in Colorado who made bison horns. His method was to use a farrier rasp to clean the scale off and then use a piece of window glass to get the final finish. If you take your time (which is the only way with this method) you get nice even work. I imagine if you were to use a belt sander you would get ripples or waves which would really show in the finished project. I work on it till I cant stand the smell anymore. I would say I am 3/4 of the polishing done.

This aint fancy but works good. Put it together some years back when my wife bought me a 50 cap gun. Measure holds about 83 grains of 2f. Brass came from Dixie gunworks. Steer horn from a local cowboy. Danny there ain't a thing wrong with that horn! And I really like the measure too. My horn came from a skull I found out in the pasture at my sister's place. They lost a cow at some point and I happened by at just the right time... Slipped both horns right off their cores, no muss no fuss and no boiling. It has been a journey and learning experience... But I'm hardheaded so I'm going to make another attempt at it. Mike

I would say I am 3/4 of the polishing done. I didn't have a decent chunk of glass handy or I would have used it... Most of the work on mine was done with a rasp or file for rough removal and then either a razor blade or pocket knife held at 90° for finish scraping. I've started on horn #2... I actually messed up drilling the pour hole and figured it was garbage. But I came up with a plan. I'll try to take a few pictures if it works and share them. Mike

Nice work. It'd be nice to see pics of the process as you you built it. I finally got around to checking my tablet. Had a few pictures on it from when I started. I lost most of the pictures when my old phone died, including the pictures of the walnut base when I turned it on the lathe. Mike
