Bought my first truck today, 2005 tacoma. Real exited until the check engine light came on just as we got it home. I'll have to have it checked to see what's up tomorrow. frown

Sounds like they had it turned off so potential buyers would not see it

Probably catalytic converter issue, if so just keep driving it.

Shouldn't be a big deal. You should be able to get it to go off. Check your owners manual on how to do it. They are designed to come on after so many miles or after so many miles since the oil was changed. On my 2016 it comes on every 5000 miles.

Either way I would call the dealer to inform them in case it's something more major.

I think but not sure on lemon law or a 3 day period you have to change your mind on the deal.

It's usually something minor . Sometimes the local auto parts stores will plug in a code reader for you at no charge

I had one do that. I called the dealer, he told me to unscrew and tighten the gas cap. It worked. Dont know why.

Robert, if the light is on steady probably emissions, gas cap, O2 sensor ext if the light is blinking probably something more serious. Good luck.

Isn't it the maintenance required light you are talking about? The check engine light is for more serious issues (sometimes).

The check engine light is on in my Tundra, I believe it is a vacuum issue caused by a bad gas cap, just ordered a new one.

Eh...wot?

Welcome to your beginnings of adulthood. Like said before, probably emissions or gas cap.

I wouldn't be without a code reader, but if you don't have one they will read it for you for free at most chain auto parts stores.

It's crazy the amount of electronics on the newer vehicles a average backyard mechanic does not have much of a chance nowadays working on one of the newer ones. They offer you like 5 different extended warranty options now one specific for electronics.

I have a 2005 also , it happens every time a oil change is req.
Dealers reset before it comes on .
Its designed to be a reminder type thing .
You tube has the fix for it.
Assuming this is the issue.

You tube fix.

Many times is is something insignificant, but sometimes it needs attention in the very near future.
My DPFE sensor is getting weak on my 1997 F150, it will light up the "check engine" light every now and then but then reset and go off.
If your truck is running good, no knocks, isn't smoking blue/black/white, I wouldn't worry a whole lot but I would get the code read!
When one of my oxygen sensors failed it lit up the light on the dash but my truck actually ran better!!

ended up being a p0335 code, I erased it and hope it doesn't come back right away. If it does I'll worry about it then. Parts shouldn't be too expensive.

Mine too. Although the check engine light is off for the time being, my eternal ABS light and brake warning light are both glowing strong!! I actually like the brake system better with the ABS deactivated!!
