first step what is your planned mode of carry?
what can you afford to practice with for a minimum 50 rounds a month?

my edc is a hk vp40. best self defense pistol in my opinion. sort of like a glock, but better in every way. You can find them pretty reasonably priced online. hornady 155gr xtp over max load of power pistol i get 1250fps over a chrono.

the XDs 45 just about disappears in a IWB and it is very shootable
the S&W Seild is also going to be very easy to carry
you can carry just about anything I think a Glock 19 /23 is about the biggest thing I want to stuff in my pants although I have done a 17 / 22 it is a bit much all day
my EDC is a Ruger LC9 I can put it in a pocket holster for deep concealment , IWB it hides very well , even OWB with the right holster and a untucked shirt.
if I am going bigger higher capacity G19 IWB
the really nice part is if you go small you can toss in a pocket , not to many people expect you to pull a gun from your pocket , and you can actually get your grip with out tipping anyone off so unlike normal concealed time to first shot that is slowed by clothing your on target very fast sub second, a hand in your pocket with your grip wile you talk to someone gives you under a second to round on target but you sacrifice capacity and some velocity with the 3.125 inch barrel.
I haven't shot the VP40 but the VP9 is a great gun fits the hand very well for a gun that holds 15 it feels just a bit smaller than the G19 I think that is in thickness mostly.
I think once you have a list it is time to go rent , you may find a 40 in a smaller gun to be a bit much remember to try strong hand and weak hand only for a few rounds get a feel for your realistic time per shot 9, 40 , 45 none of them is a death ray especially from a 3-4 inch barrel you should train to shoot 2-3 and assess , assess doesn't mean get their pulse , it is a 1/4 to 1/2 second are they still a threat? , if you can't say no 2-3 more assess and get ready to move your almost empty

I carry a Sig Sauer P938, 9mm, on a daily basis.
Regarding the 9mm being powerful enough, if you choose a premium self defense bullet, such as Speer Gold Dot, Hornady XTP, Federal Hi Shok, etc., the 9mm is very good.
I had a Springfield XDs 45 Auto for a short time. Nice, compact platform, however - I suggest you actually shoot one before you take the plunge and buy it for carry. I would opt for the 9mm or 40 S&W model.

I prefer my full size 1911. But in the summer, it is a bit much to conceal. I have been carrying Springfield XDs 45 for about 5 years now and really like how small it is. At work, I carry a S&W Shield 9mm. I am not, nor have I ever been a fan of the 9mm. I know ammo has a come a long way with the 9mm, but I still wouldn't own one. I bought a S&W Shield .40 for my wife and she loves it. I find myself carrying it often myself. For what its worth, my wife and I both carry speer gold dot ammo in both my .45 and her .40

I think one of the importuned things to consider is how you are going to carry the weapon.

I carry a glock 17 every day. It's on my belt right now. I have a leather and kydex holster that goes inside my jeans and clips over my belt. I where a light jacket over it in the winter and tuck my shirt over it in the summer. I also have a tactical tee shirt for church. It's spandex with a holster under each arm. I wear a long sleeve shirt and tie and carry the same glock 17 and I put two clips under my free arm. No one can ever tell it is there. I have also carried a CZ SP101 and a 1911 but they usually end up causing some kind of warrobe malfunction if I wear them on my belt all day. Both of those guns are heavier than the glock. Both of those guns also sag in the tee shirt and end up resting on the arm of the church pew or digging a hole in my side. The tee shirts fit pretty tight - yo might want to look them up on the internet - be forewarned though that the material is ''breathable'' but it can really start to stink fast if you get hot.... 9mm is great. Works just fine plus the glock has 17 shots. Easy to make a fast follow-up because recoil is manageable. I reload too and have some great loads for it. I use light loads for practice and drills and regular ones for everyday. As mentioned above- there are some interesting loads out there now.
Just passin through

I think one of the importuned things to consider is how you are going to carry the weapon. 2X I love a good leather paddle holster easy on and off just loosen up the belt a little, anything complicated to deal with will end up at home after a while in most cases.
