Nobody mentioned the .220 Swift .. Cheap to feed was one of the criteria so the swift, 22-250 and the likes are out of the running i guess. Having said that, my 22-250 made a mess out of foxes that were well beyond what one could fix with a needle and thread

I like the hardwood stock and trigger on the II. Wish I could find one without a scope. I've already got some decent glass to put on it. I don't see any without but you can always pull it off put your glass on and ebay the one that came with the rifle to recover some cash.

220 Swift in the Hornady V Max is around $25 a box of 20.
.223 in the same Hornady ammo , is around $17 a box.
Yes, it's $8 more per box, but I guess it all depends on how many Bobcat, Fox and Coyote he expects to get in a Season.
The .220 Swift is a great caliber for Coyote . ultramax re-manufactured 21.99 at cabelas for 50 rounds of soft point 55gr it also sounds like he likes to shoot a bunch for fun

Anyone have the Thompson Center Compass? That is what I am shooting at present. I had a 22-250 in the Axis, I prefer the TC hands down. Adj. trigger, decent enough stock, and with the 1-10 twist it shoots a few different weights/loads really well. 204 caliber BTW.

It all depends on how you plan to use it. If you plan on calling them in, most any small centerfire will do fine. If im chasing them, i ramp it up to heavier bullets. Coyotes can take alot of damage and keep on trucking. Sure, ive killed em with the smaller calibers while chasing but, you gotta put it in a vital area. Toughest critters on the planet.
I will gladly feast on those who would subdue me.

The .220 Swift is a great caliber for Coyote . This is going to be my new plinking gun too. I've never predator hunted before so I see your point about the hunting ammo but I though it would be fun to run through some cheap stuff now and again at the range.

It's a lot of very thick cover where I live so i think I'll be calling them in.

Johnny... Have you looks at the .17 super magnum? Very impressive ballistics, rimfire, easy on the pocket to shoot, and will easily handle coyotes out to 250 yards. Great plinking caliber as well.

Cabela's has the 700 adl varmint on sale for $425 and Remington has $100 mail in rebate the the rifle would be $325. Not a fan of the integrated mag but for that price it seems pretty good. 1:12 twist rate is gonna make a light bullet only? Anyone do the rebate? How long did it take to get your money back? https://www.cabelas.com/product/shooting...65.uts?slotId=1

Been loading for .22 for about 30 years- that gets my vote for under 150yds. Cheap to reload for too - it holds about 10 grains of powder for most loads. I shoot a Savage 23D - super accurate. The hornet is light and not as loud as the .223.
I heard Remington was having trouble- might want to check it out
Just passin through

generally about 60gr is the upper limit for a 1:12 twist but that is not a bad thing.
you were not looking for extreme range and a 40 , 45 , 50 , 52, and 55 will do very well with the 200 yards you though might be your longest shot
it will depend some on the ammo but with most of those you can probably sight in 1 inch high at 100 yards and spot on at 200 so that you could reasonably hit a softball size target just aiming at the middle from 25 to 225 yards.
it has been common for varmint hunting to use the lighter end of the .224 bullet selection to give very flat trajectory so it is just aim and squeeze no worry about hold overs on anything within a reasonable range of 250 yards or so
an up side for the 700rem is that everyone makes parts for the 700 , triggers , stocks , bottom metal , scope bases so if you get an itch to change it you can.

I would lean towards a light gun for coyote hunting , heavy barrels are nice for prolonged shooting , but coyote hunting to 200 yards is neither an extreme shot nor prolonged shooting.
an 11 pound rifle gets to feeling so much heavier when you carry it a mile
remember you still have to add the optic to the weight of the gun
