I filled my otter tag. I'll send the pelt in for tanning. I'm wondering if the carcass would work for coyote bait. I always hear about Beaver working good for coyote bait and sometimes muskrat, but what about an otter for use as coyote bait?

If I were you I would use it. Cut out the glands and freeze them as well. Take the flesh and chunk it up and freeze it until you find someone who has used it in the past and can help you make a good bait out of it. If nothing else add a little castor, fish oil and preserve it. Ought to be a decent K-9 bait.

Very poor would be my answer. I have discarded many otter carcasses in coyote bait stations and they are always the last eaten by any animal or bird.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Beaver are prey animals in they eat pleasant foods. Otter are of the Mustelidae or weasel family in predators so they are not pleasant to eat.
Glands of the weasel family are a curiosity to the canine group.

An otter would make an addition to a bait station for bulk, but not a food source as beaver would be.

For a lure, just replace the mink with a otter for a change up.

Nelson's - Coyote # 1 Formula
In a Clean Quart Jar Add:

3 oz. Ground Tonquin Musk Pods
2 oz. Ground Muskrat Musk
1 oz. Ground Beaver Castor
1 oz. Mink Musk
1/2 oz. Asafortida Tincture
1 tsp. Lovage Oil
1 oz. Ambergris
8 oz. Rotted Mice Juice

Fill jar with Fish Juice and mix very well. Allow to age in a warm place for a month. Use 6 drops at set.

I have dumped and/or used many whole beaver carcasses for coyote and bobcat draw stations. Have disposed of a fair amount of otter carcasses also. No bird or animal in my country will touch an otter carcass, not even buzzards.

Dumped about a dozen otter carcasses inside a coyote hound training enclosure at the request of the pen owner. They were never touched.

Beaver and rats disappear first then fox and some coyote get hit by coon. But otter not even a sniff. Eagles won't even look and they ain't picky. Otter glands now that's a different story.
