Hi folks. I just got several #4 Newhouse with the old flat chain. Problem is someone cut the rings off. I there any way to replace them?

Open the swivel at the spring (at your own risk) to remove chain. Take every link apart till you get to the ring end. Install ring. Assemble in reverse order... crazy

Or pick up a complete chain, ring, swivel combo. Then remove the jawpost nut (at your own risk) from that side and replace the whole chain. wink

Original rings are cast and tough to weld.. The sloppy way to go sick

If anyone has pictures of 1.5 Newhouse orignal chain set ups I would really appreciate seeing them. I have several different ones on my traps and some cant be correct. Thanks as always. You folks are great.

I think some of the early ones had chains like the loose chain in the bottom of the pic. The early one I have pictured just has a homemade chain. Next came the cast chains but I don't have a 1 1/2 like that. Last pic the top chain is the last model.

Dale how many different swivels are used on the #1 and # 1 1/2's. I dug my 1 1/2'sut and my #1's and they both have different swivels. The same flat chain though. I am guessing that the swivel is wrong on my # 1. Almost looks like a Triumph swivel, flat stock.

There is a number of different swivels. Newhouse made traps for atleast 150 years the trap went through many changes. Most changes where intended to make the traps cheaper to manufacture. If your number one has a swivel made of sheet metal with the top where it goes through looks like a small mushroom cap that is called a kenwood style swivel.

After I posted this I went looked at a Victor and a Mascot #1's that have the same swivel. I figured I better ask.

Here's a few styles. Second from left is probably the most common. Maybe someone could post more styles as this is all I have.

yep the 2nd from the left is the one. Wow thought I was going to go shopping for parts. I have that one and the next one in the middle on the Newhouse traps I have.

The "next one in the middle" is a 1 1/2 size chain but it came from a lot of #1s that were all the same.... PAT. on pan but no date.

I have several someone put #4 Newhouse chains on. I am trying to get it all corrected. Did they ever sell one with a more modern lighter chain.

Here are most but still not all of the Newhouse #1 and #1 1/2, swivel and chain combinations.

#1 Newhouse factory chain and swivels.

#1 1/2 Newhouse factory chain and swivels.

There I fixed it for you Jim. You and Dean have probably forgotten more things about vintage traps than I'll ever learn.
