Does anyone have any experience hunting eastern Kentucky public ground mainly the Daniel Boone National Forest? Im thinking of heading down Wednesday to scout a few days and then hunt the opening weekend. Kind of a spur of the moment thing trying to get in a little bit of hunting before our opener in 2 weeks. Im not looking for spots or anything just some general info on turkey population density and hunting pressure.

Where Ive hunted its mainly ag ground thats flat as a pancake with predictable turkey roosts and movement. From what ive saw on topos and reading other forum posts about the area its pretty rugged terrain. Do the turkeys have a preference for roosting areas such as ridge tops or bottoms? Im going into this not expecting much success hunting wise but it should be a good adventure.

There's plenty of birds on DBNF. Some areas close to the roads get a lot of pressure. I'd advise finding a good long old logging road that they don't drive on and try off both sides to get one going. They are a lot closer sometimes than you think when they're gobbling over in the holler. I'm not an expert hunter but I've seen them roost higher rather than lower on the ridges unless real windy. I have had luck right on the ends of long points in my local area.

Leave room in your turkey vest for an elk shed or two!
