So the new dnr proposed regulations state a limit of 6 rounds for deer hunting with shotguns and straight-walled ammo shooting rifles and handguns.

Explain the logic behind this to me.

Quote:
The DNR is writing up rule changes for deer hunting

For purposes of deer hunting, a limit of six cartridges is imposed for shotguns, straight wall cartridge
(SWC) rifles, and handguns. The six-cartridge limit is being added to improve human and hunter safety
and to reduce the likelihood of wounding deer.
Clarifications are made to the definition of a legal handgun and to the legal calibers for SWC
rifles. These clarifications will ensure that hunters can determine what firearms are a legal method
of take for deer hunting in this state. These definitions apply only to the firearms that may be used
while deer hunting and have no bearing on or relevance to other firearms laws. This rule making also
removes handguns as a method of take from the late muzzleloader season to restore the original intent
of the season.

There has always been a five round limit on centerfire rifles in PA when they are being used for deer.

Eh...wot?

Well, the logic seems to me to prevent people from slinging 10 rounds at a running deer at 500 yards or something similar to that, without paying attention to their surroundings. Not saying it's a regulation I agree with per se, but I will say, why would anyone need more than 6 rounds in a short enough time frame that they couldn't reload? I've never seen anyone sling that much lead in my life. And if they are slinging that much lead without a deer on the ground, they might need realistic expectations of their weapons or more practice.

That is very generous. Ohio permits three in a rifle or shotgun, and only one in a muzzleloader.

Probably get more deer killed with only single shots allowed. people thinking about follow up shots will always need them.

P.S. Restricting whats legal for hunting has no bearing on the 2nd IMO. Hunting has nothing at all to do with self defense. I will fight every way thats legal against infringements on whats legal to own or carry.

my guess if your area is like mine , guys are shooting smooth bore slugs , they can't hit what they want past 50 yards so they send more lead down range.

chances this will change that 0.0001% most shotguns only hold 5 or 6 so that is all they are sending down range now , accepted that the deer runs back and forth down the line of guys and they all send 5 slugs x5 guys and some idiot thinks they have a 25 round shotgun hammering away down it the swamp.

if they just used a rifle they would treat it like a rifle and be more likely to hit what they are aiming at.

our Sheriff deputy running hunters ed commented how many fewer calls they got after the county went rifle

smooth bore slugs will go 300 yards , but you can only accurately place them in the kill zone to around 100 yards and people seem to think they drop a lot more than they do and will aim 2 feet over a deer at 125 yards

It also stinks of preparing you for "a sporting purpose " law coming down the pipe , if your gun holds more than 6 it has no "sporting Purpose" of course if you buy a "sporting purpose" you might as well line up for the cattle cars and get ready for the gas chamber.

Only reason I can think of is it's 1 more than 5 and 1 less than 7.

This is not correct. There is no limit on centerfire rifles in Pennsylvania and hasn't been since at least the 80's if ever.

Only capacity restriction here is that .22 centerfire may only hold 7 rounds.

I wouldn't see a problem with this since my BOLT ACTION HUNTING rifle only holds 4 plus one in barrel. But I never load 5 because I have to just drop one in the chamber and push down on the top round as I close the bolt. My slug gun holds 5 but some WMA areas require them to be plugged for 3 only. Small game requires the plug so I never take it out.

This thinly veiled snide comment it exactly the reason for the regulation change if you ask me. More specifically the .450 Bushmaster in an AR platform.

I've been hunting in Pa. since 1973 and there has ALWAYS been a 5 shot limit.

Year round deer season = defacto high capacity magazine ban.

Are you sure about that? The old 30-30 lever actions, used forever hold 7 I think and I don't know any one that used one to stop at 5.
