Just Watched the movie Wind River last night. I have to say that movies lately have generally sucked, but this one impressed me and my wife.

Any movie that starts off showing a coyote getting smoked with a scoped lever action..red mist and all..had my attention from the beginning. One brutal scene toward the end, but it is meant to shake you up. Movies always miss the sound effects when snowmobiles are involved. They nailed the sound of a two stroke sled perfectly, although the timing was a bit off with the throttle. Showed the main character reloading handgun bullets...properly from what I briefly noticed. Whoever they got advice from for real life rural living knew what he was doing. Obviously some creative license, but for a movie it was the best ive seen in ages.

And the storyline was great. The did a good job showing the hopelessness that unfortunately exists on some native reserves...and an ending we all wish would happen in real life.

Yea, its pretty tough to find a movie where you cant find many holes in the realism. He even had his rifle strapped to a badlands 2200 pack in snow camo. I own a few badlands packs, so it was nice to see something he would actually use. He said he used to be an outfitter, and that backed it up. Small things impress me I guess, but its the details that make a difference.

He started using about a 2006 skidoo rev longtrack. 600 I believe. At first I wondered why they would use an outdated sled in a movie, but..thats what an old rancher would probably own.

Made me mad and the wife happy. I couldnt sit and complain about what wasnt like real life!

There was one fallacy I found though...that you can die from freezing your lungs running in cold air.. At least thats a wives tale and commonly believed, but it just cant happen.

I a totally different direction I watched "Slum Dog Millionaire" the other day; great movie. An interesting aspect I noticed, that the movie didn't really touch on, is that even though East Indian culture (at least the majority of it) which greatly values animal rights sure doesn't value human life very much.

Slumdog millionaire was awesome. Especially since it was an independent film.

Another good movie, although the theme was bit dark was Mr Brooks. One of kevin costners best. Another one that sticks out in my mind was Grand Torino with ol clint.

Show of hands: How many professional coyote whackers use Marlin Guide guns in 45/70?

haha, ok...the rifle wasnt exactly the one id use, especially in that open country. But I have certainly seen much worse interpretations of hunting /shooting in movies!

In movie circles, we all know that looking cool trumps reality. I give them a pass on this one!

And since I dont have a 45/70 or cougar, how does that gun stack up against big kitties?

Well I guess a guy could find fault with about every movie that has been made. We watched Wind River a couple of months ago and thought it was great.

Marty, at my buddies sugar shack three days ago it was just above freezing and we had an inchworm caterpillar thing just truckin along. Also recall at lower elevations in the movie there was almost no snow in some scenes. He did say how much colder it was in the mountains at night.

I find the spider believable because I dont think it was that cold where that scene was. I could be mistaken though since I only saw it once.

That's true, Zim- and I try to keep in mind the producers in movies- who direct the actors . I have to work to ignore some things too- the most advanced technically correct movies- STILL have- horses whinny or make noise when they rear up or jump with a rider....they never make a sound. By and large they are silent under stress or in action.

That and aiming a pistol ready to shoot -or been shooting- with the hammer not cocked. Or firing dozens of rounds without reloading smile

You are correct, though- just enjoy the movie and let the harrsesss make all the noise dubbed to them !

I live and ranch on the Wind River and have not seen the movie yet. Might have to watch it and see how to live right!

I guess my point with this one was that i wasnt distracted trying to point out all the things that were way off and could actually enjoy it! haha
