Caught some long distant shots of a loner resting on a pier behind my house on Lake Ontario last evening. They are migrating back to the far north for the nesting season after overwintering in this region.

Most of our sightings are snowys out in a field, standing or flying. I saw one up close at the road this winter

Still have several hanging around here. They are usually gone by now.
Neat shots on the ice, Jonathan.

VS, Yes, on the same pier December 2nd. One was there from the afternoon until dusk.

I think it is really interesting how birds travel the same paths year after year. I banded a swan and 9 years later I shot it 3 miles from where I banded it. I had a morning dove with a large white spot on it's wing come to feed at the house in the spring for several years

I think black birds that nest here return to same place

Had one hanging out here near my place in western KS this past winter; got a few pictures, but nothing near as good as those. We don't see them here very often. Only the third one I remember seeing.

Saw an American kestrel take a mouse or stripped gopher while driving, it did it just as I was next to it, the sparrow hawk grabbed the rodent and moved it about 5 feet further from the road.
There is about 95 or more percent of ground covered in snow. The shoulder of the road is about the only bare spot near there

Saw an owl snatch a young chicken off a tree limb at dusk one afternoon. Landed in farm path with the chicken and didnt want to leave so that I could pass through. I waited patiently, and won the stand off.

I wonder what they think when they come south with. all the trees and stuff to perch on! They still seem to use the ground more than an elevated place to perch. They are a tundra bird, are they not?
