Not sure if this has been covered in previous posts but here it goes. I'm going to give Maine bear trapping a go this season. However, I want to target large bears. Does anyone know where to place the stop to avoid bears that are < 200lbs ?

That is a great question. Maybe email Belisle and ask them their thoughts.

Just release the smaller ones.

Hang your bait once a large one is hitting then set up a leg snare up hi.

On the smaller ones just put catchpole around neck and pin em down an remove snare.TIP: Make sure mom ain't close by!

Use a bucket snare and mount it 6 feet high in a tree.

I like Dirt’s idea but can’t use that in Maine. Has to be “at or below ground level”. I struggled with that same question and after talking to several successful bear trappers I came to the conclusion that minimum snare closing size might not be the best way to target big bears. To quote an old time bear trapper some small bears have big feet and some big bears have small feet so after a couple of years of playing with sizes and losing decent bears this year I set my snare just above the legal minimum But set it on a bait that was dominated by a big bear and had very little small bear activity. It worked well for me but I realize that might not be possible for everyone but seems to work for most of the guys I talked to. I have heard stories of releasing some with half a sheet of plywood and a garden rake but I wasn’t excited to try it!

TrapperChrisME is their a logical reason for Maine's rule? I never caught anything but bears in the bucket sets and way more effective than ground snares for me.

Setting a snare 6ft in a tree seems like a good way to neck snare a bear.

I snared four bears and every one I snared pulled out. I kept making the loop smaller and they still got away. I'm going to go back one of these days and figure it out, maybe go with someone who has done a lot of it because I clearly wasn't doing it right.

I don't think anywhere in the USA would allow an elevated open snare set for bear.
That said, I don't understand why we can't foot snare bears. It seems very humane to me. I know in Wi we can foot snare coyotes. I don't understand why Maine is the only state to allow foot snaring bears.

You are not going to neck snare too many bears with a 6 or 7 inch loop and the trigger at the back of the bucket with a 6 inch hole in the lid. Could snout one though.

First off, you need to find a bear here over 200lbs. They exist...somewhere

Sleek, all Maine Black Bears are over 200lbs,they just seem to lose 50lbs of air when you shoot them!

But to answer your question Chris, about avoiding smaller bears...It's been my experience that targeting larger bears in Maine, you will be better off trapping mid to late October. By then more sows and cubs will have started denning and the bigger males tend to den later. However with weather patterns these days, who knows...Good luck...
