North Dakota. Rat trapping in the spring. Fishing in the summer. Waterfowl in the fall, and coyotes and fox all winter.

I truly enjoyed my time in central North Dakota. Good fishing, phenomenal upland bird and waterfowl hunting. Some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. If I ever leave Idaho, it will be to go back to ND... but man do those winters SUCK.

maybe I don't know what I am missing but , I could live the rest of my life without ever leaving Wisconsin and be OK with that
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

If you could pick one state to live in what would it be? Northern Minnesota, seems like I answered this before one time.

If you could pick one state to live in what would it be? Look closely at the profile of each user, location is often included. Simply put each of us have chosen one state and here we are. Not one of us is forced to live in the state we do, always a matter choice.

If you can stand the weather, north dakota has a lot to offer. It has some wild weather swings, really hot in the summer and really cold in the winter and the ever present wind.
I like it here in Minnesota because I love to fish as well as hunt and trap and I have 200 good fishing lakes within 30 minutes of my house. Winters can get really harsh and long. If all I hunted was whitetails I would move back to Iowa. I really like the mountains and miss living in them, but I usually take a trip west every other year to satisfy that thirst.
I like where I am now, not just for the fishing, but because I am close to Canada, where I fish and hunt (deer and bears) several times a year. To each his own.
The older I get the less I like winter. Within the 6-8 years I expect I will sell the property I have now and move to Arizona or Texas for the winter, and have a small house on a lake up here for the spring, summer and fall.

I have been to 47 of our 50 states over the years only lacking Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii.
My top 5 would be Maine, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota. If I did not already live in WV it would be in my top 5. Interesting. I have also been in 47 states, lacking Rhode Island, Delaware and Hawaii.

I just got back from a road trip in the "Great American Desert" Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. There is a reason people do not want to live there.

Louisiana is pretty decent for an outdoorsman. It does have it's drawbacks.
Besides here, Wyoming, Arkansas, Iowa, Alaska, either of the Dakotas, Montana.

One chooses, be it family, job or place to live; so it is entirely true. I have not had the need to wonder like many of my brothers & sisters here on this site, but have done a little bit. That said, at one time I almost moved to Co, glad I didn't now. Some never see the beauty in this cornfield country of Indiana. Indiana is not all corn & beans, our trapping laws are some of the best in the country. Plenty of deer & turkeys, & other game. I wish the muskrat & grey fox populations were better, but we can now trap otter & from what I see bobcat next year. Once I could say I was staying here because my folks were getting older, now it is me who is the older one. I will die here in Indiana.

Never been there but from what I've seen on hunting shows I like the looks of New Mexico especially in the higher elevations. I like the Sandhills of Nebraska too. Both are full, I hear SD is nice.

I am trying to talk the wife into going to Wyoming or Alaska, if MN ever passes the crazy BS gun laws or restricts more of my trapping stuff then she will no longer have a say in it. I did stay in NM for a bit in the late 90s, if you live in the northern area it is absolutely beautiful and I wouldn't mind going back.

Any state that has smallmouth bass within a reasonable driving distance and isn't stupid cold nor stupid hot. I have found that any state which has smallmouth bass generally has everything else which an outdoors person wants and needs.

I have been to all 50 states, went to school at the U of Wyoming in the early 70's. You may think I am nuts (that is for sure a majority opinion) but I like it here in North Jersey. No place I have been has as many animals per square mile as right here!!! Can fish for all the major fresh water fish (including muskie),one hour away you can fish the Atlantic ocean, can deer hunt for 5 months (limit is 7 bucks, unlimited does in many zones) hunt big black bears, small game. Two drawbacks are no foothold traps, this may be blasphemy but that makes one a better trapper, you really have to know your stuff to be successful without them and no bobcat season. Eric Eric can have North Jersey. But I agree with him I'v trapped all over this county. I'll take South Jersey Port Republic Is where I live. To the east of my house Tide water Nacote (naket)Creek in my back yard Which leads to the Mullica river one of the 3 cleanest rivers on the intire east coast. The other two rivers run into the Mullica. The Mullica umptys into the cleanest bay on the east coast .The bay to the ocean. All of which I have made a good living on.I have made my living off the water and land all my life year round. Where else can you do that To the west west of my house. 1.1 milion acers of open land The PINE BARRENS.Yes that is in NJ Plenty of land and water animals to (Unlimted Antlerless deer)hunt and trap Much milder weather than Eric has.And no darn mountins FLAT LAND I love it. Down here we do not have bears of bobcats that Eric has to put up with. Now about making a living off the water and land here. ITS fast becoming a thing of the past. To many liberails . They have reglated out of a living. But I'm 67 now. My body is all but wore out. Its time to slow down any how. NOT give up tho. Glad I have Socoal Surity check now.

A state to live in and trap in might be totally different. A friend moved to WI for certain reasons but soon found their trapping regs were not what he was expecting. He's glad he kept his license in MN.
As Bob W said. Never move just for trapping opportunities. My trucks wheels are round and goes anywhere I point it.
Alaska sounds great but competitive trapping is not allowed. Isn't that the way it is in Canada as well? And talk about a welfare state, Les....Alaska has us beat. I'm also not crazy about checking my traps in the dark all the time...and months of very limited sunlight.

I was born in PA and we moved to MI when I was about 8 years old. I'm 60 now and consider MI one of the finest states for outdoors men. Some Great Lakes trivia - You are never more than 85 miles from a Great Lake, MI has more than 11,000 inland lakes, you are never more than 6 miles from water(river, lake, or great lake), 1,300 public boat ramps, more than 80 public harbors, 3,288 miles of Great Lake shoreline. It's getting a little crowded here in S. MI but for the most part the trapping and hunting is pretty good. I think I'll stay here.

I don't know. I've never left the east coast. out of all of them I'd say Pennsylvania is the best.
I have a friend in Idaho (Moving back this month because it is too expensive to live there) And he has seen wolves, moose, mountain lion, whitetail and mule deer, coyotes, turkeys, and the list goes on and on and on. They have all the neat animals of north America, Wild and living in their back yard. Sounds like a neat place to live to me. I'm going out to Wyoming next summer for a 4-H exchange so I might be able to give a little more detailed answer then.

Louisiana is pretty decent for an outdoorsman. It does have it's drawbacks.
Besides here, Wyoming, Arkansas, Iowa, Alaska, either of the Dakotas, Montana. I spent three years at Fort Polk, Louisiana and the LA summers are worse than Alaska and Kansas winters and last a lot longer too. I enjoyed the hunting there, but it's too hot for me.

The deep south to hot for us to but if you stay around long enough the sun will burn your brain up and you won't have enough sense to leave, lol.

Boy, a guy can dream. I am no doubt at an age that I will probably not move. Maine is in many ways a great state to live in. The fishing can be fantastic inland and in sea. Can be good hunting in some parts but the Inland Fish Game does not, despite their claims, act as if the deer population does not matter.
I have set through an advisory committee a year or so ago when boar members (that were Maine guides of long standing) told the top dog that numbers were seriously hurting in their part of the state. Despite input like that, those areas saw increased doe permits. And I won't even start in on the trapping regulations and how they are cumbersome to say the least.
I have heard so much good about out West that it sure sounds good. Places with high dollar coyotes and bobcats would be nice. Have a friend that spent several month out in Wyoming and Montana. He claimed the folks he ran into were incredibly friendly. He also said everyone seemed to live a slower paced life. It just have been his perspective.
Was in Colorado for a very short stay last fall but did get to see some parts. (Yes I know there is not supposed to be a lot of foot trapping but I sure continue to read about a lot of it going on???) I considered that country to be some kind of rough. We were up near Fort Carson I believe, and the mountains seems like they went for ever. i sure would hate to have work that country.
Nebraska and North Dakota sounds nice. Winters cannot be much worse than here, but maybe they are. When I was younger I always wanted to fly fish out West. Heck now I hardly have time to even fish here. Life changes.

Trapping In Alaska sounds neat. But for putting up big numbers you would be better off trapping the lower 48.

I think what is most important is to be happy wherever you are until you can change locations if desired, and then be happy there.
Some of us have made life decisions that at the time were what we thought to be wise. Sometimes the results of our life decisions are not the desired results.
Some of us live where we do because of the results of our decisions. Some of us are restrained by barriers of our own creation. Some can relocate and some cannot. Sometimes the cost outweighs any potential benefits.
Every decision has multiple outcomes, unfortunately some cannot be anticipated. Sometimes the best state is wherever you may be. Maybe philosophic reflection is helpful.

Oregon would be absolute perfect if we could ship every liberal back to Cali Those liberals sure know how to ruin a good thing. Don’t send any more of them liberals across the border into Idaho. They ruined and are ruining many western states.

I've never been to Alaska or Hawaii. My grandad told me once if I went to Alaska I'd never leave, so might be a good thing I've never gone.
I'm right where I want to be. Id say that's true for 99% of North Americans. Otherwise we would just move.

In Alaska you could catch 1 25th the number of animals and make the same money.ie: 2500 $4 rats or 100 $100 dollar marten. Its a no brainer beav.Plus way easier to harvest.Ride up to the tree on your ski doo and pluck the marten off the tree like an apple or wade thru stnking swamp mud with chest waders all day, lol.

Boco you don't have a clue when It comes to rat trapping In ND. If you have rats It's no problem catching 100 or so a day. I've done as many as 200 a day In the spring. But were checking twice a day. In most cases It's about 10' from the hard road to the traps. Set 4 stools about 4 feet apart and move on to the next location.. Never wore waders yet.
Your going to be putting a lot more time and money catching those 100 marten then I will catching those 2,500 rats. And as far as I can see there aren't any $100.00 marten In this fur market.
Remember I spent 7 weeks trapping marten and Lynx and beaver In Ontario and I know what It takes to catch a 100 marten. In 7 weeks we took 58 marten off of 2 trap lines.

Probably so White. I/m only going by what a resident uttered.
Am I wrong about the competitive trapping? Can you run along, or on top of someone elses line? I heard need to be 5 miles away...Or is that just an old tale years past? There is no law or regulation like that. Hasn't been for at least the 45 yers I've been here. If I break out a trail it is perfectly legal for you to run it and set right beside me. BUT...that would indicate poor judgement on your part
